About the Author
Stephen Jenner has 25 years experience in finance and programme management roles in the public sector including as a member of the Senior Civil Service since 1999. From 2005-08 he headed the CJS IT portfolio, a £2bn investment in modernising justice. The approach adopted won the 2007 Civil Service Financial Management award and has been recognised internationally in reports to the European Commission, the OECD and in a short case study by Gartner. More recently he has participated in the development of Portfolio Management as part of the Cabinet Office's ICT strategy and he co-ordinates the cross-government Project Portfolio Management Special Interest Group as well as playing a leading role in the development of OGC guidance in this area.

I loved it

Another great writing book from Rebecca LuElla Miller. I loved her last and this one is, I think, even better. Love that she gets me thinking and makes me want to dive in to my own work and get to know my characters better and understand what motivates them. Plus, since I have to read so many manuscripts for my job, I really appreciate her starting with a word about how characters need to be active. I love that she talks about conflict an motivation throughout the book. These things--or the lack of these things, I should say--put me to sleep when I'm reading. So I'm really glad to for the clear instruction there. But she gives so much more good stuff in this book, too.

Buy the book, do the writing exercises, apply what you read to your characters in your WIPs. You can't go wrong. Read a chapter a day before you dive into your WIP. Honestly. You won't be sorry.

Great tips for building larger-than-life characters!

I like that this book promotes "larger than life" characters by taking the position that they are NOT required to have a "fatal flaw". The author contends that larger-than-life characters are more than simply a collection of traits gleaned from a personality model, meant to fit a "mold", and goes on to say that "art must overrule science" in order to make characters memorable...True, larger-than-life characters must say and do things that normal people rarely say and do, but wish they COULD. This was such a refreshing change from the "build-a-character" books that suggest a type-casting approach. Very helpful for both beginning writers and those more experienced looking to refine technique.

Mark Benedict is the Senior Associate for Strategic Conservation and the Senior Advisor for the Conservation Leadership Network at the Conservation Fund. He has his Ph.D. in botany/plant ecology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Ed McMahon is vice president and director of land use planning for The Conservation Fund and co-author of� Balancing Nature and Commerce in Gateway Communities (Island Press 1997).

The Conservation Fund, a national nonprofit organization, acts to protect the nation's legacy of land and water resources in partnership with other organizations, public agencies, foundations, corporations, and individuals. Since its founding in 1985, the Fund has helped its partners safeguard wildlife habitat, working landscapes, community greenspace and historic sites totaling more than 3.4 million acres throughout the nation. Its headquarters are in Arlington, Virginia.

Scholar hits the mark on higher ed outreach

David Maurrasse has produced a thoughtful study in his book which examines four rather different and distinct IHES (Institutions of Higher Education). By studying how each IHE serves its community, readers can get a good picture of the different approaches in use today. The IHEs--which include a state, an Ivy League, a private, and even a community college campus--serve as a fine set of baseline campuses for study.
Hostos is my particular concern, since I am a Dean at Hostos, and I am well versed in the challenges we face each day in serving our South Bronx community. I believe that Dr. Maurrasse has indeed hit the mark and hit it well in this study. I can, at least, verify his contextualizing of the Hostos mission and its community's needs. His method of becoming thoroughly familiar with the physical aspects of each campus and its history by closely interviewing members of the community as well as faculty, staff, administrators, and students is laudable. At Hostos I know he spoke to long-time stakeholders from the college community and the community at large.
The book should be challenging higher education policy makers to focus on improving community outreach strategic plans for years to come. IHEs can not afford to be percieved as "ivory towers."

An adequate summary

This book is one of a couple dozen in our department library. There are no surprises, no exceptional explanations, no particularly interesting examples. If we hadn't bought the book, there would have been no great loss.

The new edition of Metal Fatigue in Engineering is better, and so was the original. The introductory books by Bannantine, Suresh or Dowling are all more valuable to the stress engineers in our group. I would recommend any of those before this.
