Great Book; But Not the Best on the Subject

There are oodles and oodles of books out there on how to conquer the temptations that ensnare so many Christians, especially men. Many times we legalistically to battle these sins one at a time, not seeing the big picture of what's going on, that when our lives are dominated by sin, we have not been guarding our hearts. Proverbs 4:23 says, "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life." This book does what many others don't, it points you to your wicked and easily moldable heart as the source of your actions, both good and bad.
Unfortunately, in my opinion, the book did not deal deeply enough or thoroughly enough with the nature of sin and the importance of repentance. We have to understand that the enemy is not only outside of us, but primarily within. It is our flesh (see Romans 7:14-25). Although Rosberg would not say this, an easy conclusion to come to after reading his book is that if you keep the bad out (by removing yourself from bad influences) you are completely guarding your heart. This is only partly true. He doesn't deal with the enemy within though, that no matter how much wordly bad you run away from, you will still have to guard your heart from your flesh. The enemy isn't just the world, the enemy is your sinful nature which unless daily crucified will bring you running headlong into sin. This may be considered a minor point and Rosberg does mention it in passing in different areas. However, I felt that because of this oversight, this would not be my number one read or number one recommendation on the issue. It is a useful one, don't get me wrong, but because of the above-mentioned issue I don't feel that it is the best.
In conclusion there are two books on the issue that I would strongly recommend to be read before Guard Your Heart. Reading time is limited and it is important that discretion be taken in what to read. If after considering my recommendations you still decide to go ahead and read Guard Your Heart, you will not be led astray, but please consider my advise and try to come by the following three books and read them thoughtfully:
(1) The Enemy Within by Kris Lundgaard (ISBN: 0875522017)
(2) Not Even a Hint by Joshua Harris (ISBN: 1590521471)
(3) The Cross Centered Life by C.J. Mahaney (1590520459)

This book presents an organized and thoughtful way for both men and women to guard their marriage by guarding their thought life and their intimacy. There is need for continual teamwork and cooperation in strengthening the spiritual life of both husband and wife.

Great read for men

The top snares men fall to -- workaholism, sex, pride, etc. -- and how to avoid them are all addressed in this good book by Dr. Rosberg. The author writes well and has engaging stories (many of which are gleaned from his lenghty experience as a counselor) that amplify the subject matter.

The is the second instalment in the "Torn Between Two Lovers " trilogy and follows immediately on from "Raw". It's an interesting concept as the author intends to open up her Facebook page to allow readers to vote and therefore determine the outcome of the trilogy.

Anna Claire felt betrayed by Grayson Sloan, FBI agent at the end of Raw. He had been working undercover at her Manhattan restaurant in a bid to take down a drug ring. Feeling badly used and deceived by him Anna has fled to Aruba to lick her wounds. Nursing her broken heart she is determined to just try and forget about men!

Anna's life is about get more complicated as she has been followed by Joaquin Delacruz, a man who her ex Gray is determined to bring to justice. Joaquin is everything Anna wants in a man except for his families shady past. His family's fortune is built on a bed of crime and although he's trying hard to go legit his enemies fear what he might reveal about them.

Anna is impressed by Joaquin's honesty with her and finds herself falling for his charm. What starts out as a lighthearted affair soon hurtles both Anna and Joaquin into a passionate relationship that can only result in heartbreak and danger!

I found this a very interesting read as I wasn't quite sure how the author could make such a quick change of heart for Anna believable. In the first book she's madly in love with Gray and yet shortly after she's falling for the admittedly gorgeous Joaquin! I think I am convinced but that's only because I thought Anna was quite a shallow character and truthfully didn't really like her as much as I wanted to. Although to be fair to be a winner in business she would have to be completely selfish and dedicated.

So how will it all end and just who will Anna end up with? If honest I have my own idea of what could happen but it's fun to think that the readers get to choose. Third book in this trilogy is Reward and all that's left to say is - are you team Grayson or Team Joaquin?

In this second installment of Torn Between Two Lovers, Ms. Davis delivered the full story of the love triangle. Where Raw focuses solely on Anna Claire’s Relationship with Grayson James, Risky focuses on Anna’s relationship with Joaquin. And personally, I enjoyed this novel much better than the first and totally loving Joaquin more than Gray. Yes, I admit, I AM MOST DEFINITELY TEAM JOAQUIN.

Risky takes off right where Raw had ended. Anna now is taking her vacation away from Gray and meeting the third members of this love triangle. I actually enjoyed Anna and Joaquin’s story. Their coming together is raw and honest. I thought their attraction was off the charts from the get go and Joaquin coming clean with his intentions was unexpected. I actually thought he would lie through his teeth to get Anna into his bed and later fall for her like Gray did. But he did it; he managed to get my attention as well as Anna’s. Not only he swept her off her feet, he took the time to get to know her and to let her get to know him. That kind of beginning just takes away that insta-love type of relationship as what Anna had with Gray. And if she was smart she would do well to choose the honest man versus the one that lied from the beginning. Joaquin is dangerous, with a not so innocent past (but straightening out his present), rich, and hot as hell. There’s just no better choice.

Ms. Davis also added a bit of action and more suspense in this installment which I enjoyed more than the first book. The steam factor was hotter and I find I find it more sensual. Like I said, Ms. Davis delivered her story well and I enjoyed every bit of it. The next series will be the decision of who Anna will end up with. If you didn’t already know, Ms. Davis has not decided on whom Anna will choose. This will be up to the readers who will vote for the man they want Anna with. If you couldn’t tell already by my review, I am totally for Team Joaquin.

Which team are you!

This second entry in the Torn Between Two Lovers series revolves around Anna and Joaquin. After what she felt was a betrayal by FBI agent Grayson, heads off to Aruba where she encounter Mister tall, dark and gorgeous Joaquin. Little does she know he's the man Grayson has been trying to catch his hand at being dirty. Joaquin's intentions is to use Anna to hurt Grayson, but instead he finds himself very much attracted to her as she does to him. Unlike Grayson, he hides absolutely nothing from her. Anna quickly finds herself in a world-wind romance with Joaquin. Now the only question left is which man will Anna chose...Grayson or Joaquin.

Just as the first book in the series, Risky reads fast and is loaded with romance, smoldering sex and intrigue. Unfortunately I am even more iffy on if I like Anna character. Where running her own restaurant was such a issue in the first book, it just doesn't seem that it's all that important to her now. Joaquin is a hot, rich, self-assured and probably everything a woman could want. The sex between them is sizzling and Joaquin sure does know how to romance a girl. Yet there's something missing. Oh wait...he's not Grayson! Where Grayson's romance with Anna was probably not the smartest thing he could have done, their meeting was part of his job. Joaquin's meeting was initiated by revenge. Granted he didn't carry through on hurting Anna but still he deliberately did set out to follow her for that reason.

So in case you haven't figured it out, I am Team Grayson. One more book to go before we find out which man Anna chooses. I still think the fans voting for which guy gets the girl is a fairly interesting concept. I can't wait to see how this plays out. And, with Risky ending on such a cliffhanger I find myself itching for the next book to be released. May the best man win!

In THE BLACK HOOD #4: THE BULLET'S KISS, CHAPTER THREE, Officer Greg Hettinger confronts two of The Connection's major henchmen in a cemetery. The fight doesn't go well for either side, but The Black Hood is unmasked in the conflict and Hettinger's real identity is revealed. Nathan Wallace's COM/DCOM Blue Book provides an excellent guide to the Component Object Model (COM) development using today's Microsoft tools, from the Active Template Library (ATL) and Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC) in Visual C++ to Visual Basic and Visual J++. Alternating chapters in this book feature either tools-based programming exercises (using ATL, MFC, VB, and Visual J++) or explanations of the technical details underlying COM's many attributes and functions.

After showing off basic COM projects, the author presents a short history of COM and its elemental pieces such as interfaces, reference counting, containment, and aggregation. The book also spotlights coding with object linking and embedding (OLE) Automation, including an early example of a simple COM server for encrypting string data, a sample that's just right for demonstrating essential COM principles.

COM/DCOM then looks at ActiveX controls; shows off properties (and property pages), event handling, and persistence; and discusses distributed COM (DCOM) with examples that show how to run COM servers from remote clients.

The best sections of the book cover the COM Variant data-type, Strings (or BSTRs), and the SAFEARRAY data type in all four programming environments. The book does a fine job of explaining these essential COM topics. Later sections glance at Internet programming (with ASP and dynamic HTML [DHTML] support in each tool). More in-depth coverage of Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) comes at the end of the book (though the final chapter repeats whole paragraphs from an earlier section verbatim--obviously an editorial glitch).

Overall, this book is a perfect choice for developers who want to take their COM skills to the next level. It demystifies many of the trickier aspects of COM using concise examples from each of Microsoft's major COM development tools. --Richard Dragan

An impulse buy victim

Yet another example of how dangerous it is to impulse buy a computer book at a bookstore based on it's potential.
It's a great concept, but the depth of the errors and inconsistency in the language make it clear much of the content is surface level regurgation and not the teaching of someone who really gets it. There is much more wrong here than typos and cut and paste oversights; some of the errors are fundamental, and grievously misleading. Furthermore, I've tried to contact the publisher about corrections or explanations of specific issues and gotten no response.
The bright side is you will actually learn something as you struggle to understand how to make the examples work. It was painfull but I made progress using MSDN info and ATL source. I've also formed plenty of questions that I'm sure I'll now better apreciate expert answers for.
Beware, don't let it's potential suck you in. It took me way to long to give up on this book.
Other lessons learned:
1) Resist the bookstore computer book section, the odds are worse than the lotery. 2) Look for author's that stand behind their work with a personal email address for comments, questions, and suggestions. 3) Be extra suspicious of this publisher.

Love the concept but the errata are ridiculous.

I like the writing style, and I really like the ambitious attempt to touch on the entire spectrum from basic COM to MTS, in each of ATL, MFC, VB, and Java. But, this book is riddled with errors. I fought my way through the examples up to chapter 5, correcting things which didn't work as described in the book by trial and error, and by comparing with the supplied CD (which is often considerably different from the printed code). In chapter 5 this just got too ugly, and even when I tried to resolve it by using the examples from the CD, one of those had a hard coded absolute path based on the author's E: drive and wouldn't compile! Coriolis's claims in the intro to "guarantee several important qualities ... technical accuracy ... several editing and proofreading passes" are laughable in hindsight. What could have been a great book is severely blemished by the level of frustration it has incurred.

Riddled with errors in examples

After completing the first chapter's examples, I am greatly dissappointed in this book. The statement from the publisher on technical accuracy appears to be an all out lie. References to the same variable in code mysteriously change names from one code chunk to the next. The keyword 'interface' is shown as 'Interface' in the code, although no reference to the necessary macro is made. (page 20) One portion of the book is obviously a cut and pasted from another portion without the content being updated correctly for the current context!!! (page 17, step 11) In other words, as written, the examples do not compile and the steps involved are not explained correctly. If this continues in the following chapters, I will be seeking a refund on this one. Coriolis Technology was supposedly "founded to create a very elite group of books." Better luck next time guys.

An important book both for therapists and critics.

This is a brilliant and insightful discussion of the elegy from Hardy on down to the present, written on the boundary between psychology and literary criticism. Marred only occasionally by some academic ostentation, it is a wonderful look at what our wisest poets have to say about grief and mourning, and it also shows how real people in the world read -- and use -- poetry.

Very different type of diet book. Works more on the mental and spiritual side of dieting then on the calories/fat. New and refreshing with different ideas and cute sayings to remind yourself about staying on track

clever, inspiring, easy read book

This book is an easy read with tons of tips,"minders", and helpful suggestions to keep you motivated and inspired to stay on your diet. It has space for writing down thoughts and to keep a journal to make it your own journey and recipe for success. It is a spiritual approach but everybody, regardless of religion or lack thereof will learn something new and aspire to be healthier and take better care of him/herself. The author also includes a list of resources for diet ideas, support and spiritual growth.

You dont have to be an alcoholic to read and benefit from this book.

My adult son is a recovering alcoholic. This book really helps you understand what an alcoholic must do to keep their life in order, to save their life. I read the "Big Book" first, then this one. My son and I have discussed his disease. I feel better equipped to communicate with my son now on a level that is critical to me as a Mother. Straight forward steps that benefit all human beings, not just alcoholics. If all humans applied these principals in their lives, they would be a happier person and the world a better place.

Great reference - use in addition to the 'Big Book'

I would recommend this for everyone, not just an alcoholic or person in AA. If you, or someone you know has an alcohol problem or you arent familar with the 12 steps, read the 'Big Book' first. You will gain knowledge and an understanding of alcoholism and what the 12 steps are intended to do.

This book provides further details abouts the 12 steps., and is always a good book to reread. The more you do, the more you uncover about the 12 steps and 12 traditions.

He's not a friend of Bill, just loves AA!

Actually, my husband is reading the "12 and 12" as those of us who are friends of Bill call it. I am a 35 plus year club member, I think my husband has had two drinks his whole life! However, after attending meetings with me, he concluded this was an excellent guide for life. The Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions show us all how we can see our own character defects help others, and improve our conscious contact with God.

It not only relates to drinking but living as well. Highly recommended by us both not only for recovering people, but for family and friends and anyone who wishes to live a better life.
