Thank you Lawrence for such a great short story!
By C. Mercer
I was looking all over for this short story in "e-format" but had no luck so I e-mailed the author and he was quick to respond to my e-mail and put it up on Amazon for 99 cents! "Why I Left Harry's All Night Hamburgers" is one of my favorite Sci-Fi short stories ever. It really has a great lesson to it. I won't give anything away, but it really made me think about my own surroundings and how little I pay attention to what's around me. If you get the chance, you have to read it. If I recall, it even won a Hugo award for best short story some time ago. Thanks again for putting this up Lawrence. I will definitely check out more of your work!

My favorite short story.
By Tyler
I've been reading this story since I was in 5th grade... 16 years ago. Ive, bought this book in several different incarnations, usually with a collection of other shorts I wasn't really interested in. I'm glad to just have the story itself on kindle. It's a very touching, funny, and well written coming-of-age story. I used it for an oral interpretation class when I was in College, and everyone loved the sound of it. I think I related so much to the story because I grew up in an area much like the one in the story. I've also always been interested in Diner's, a dying piece of Americana. This story is as warm and inviting as any great diner should be. It teaches an important lesson as well, excitement and opportunity is all around you, but you have to look or you won't see it. The world is a fascinating and adventurous place. As is growing up. This was so deserving of the Hugo Award.

Grilled to perfection
By Dione Basseri
A great little story with perhaps a too heavy-handed "carpe diem" moral.

The story reminds me a bit of the old show "Sliders," but told from the point of view of someone who stayed behind. Our narrator works at a nexus for dimension travelers, growing fascinated with the multiverse to be explored, only deciding to stay behind when one of the lost travelers tells him of all the wonders our world already has to offer.

I've actually listened to this a few times, and I'm always pleased to hear it. Quick, compact, a real treat.

Arc Dream Publishing is proud to present the first-ever ebook edition of the legendary Cthulhu Mythos Encyclopedia by Dan Harms.

"...some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age." --H.P. Lovecraft, 'The Call of Cthulhu'

That day is here. The Cthulhu Mythos Encyclopedia explains every mind-blasting facet of the Cthulhu Mythos envisioned by H.P. Lovecraft and expanded by countless horror writers and gamers in the decades since the master's death.

From "Abbith" to "Zylac," with in-depth stops along the way for the likes of "Azathoth" and "Yog-Sothoth," the Cthulhu Mythos Encyclopedia painstakingly pieces together disassociated knowledge of every last Thing Which Man Was Not Meant to Know.

And now it's digital, with a comprehensive linked table of contents and the built-in searchability of e-readers. You will go mad from revelation faster than ever before.

Exactly What It Says
By Paul Burks
I am unsure why the previous reviewer's screen didn't format it properly, it works on my iPad, Kindle, and Droid. It is a straightforward encyclopedia of H.P. Lovecraft and those who expanded on his mythos' creations. The writing is direct and concise. The only reason I did not give it five stars was due to the lack of hyperlinks when it tells you to reference another entry when a being has multiple aliases.

A great resource
By klempk
I am writing this review in part as a response to the two negative reviews posted near the end of 2012. Perhaps the publisher has updated the files since these were posted, but I did not encounter the two problems noted. So:

1) There is indeed a Table of Contents, and it works well.

2) The formatting is just fine, and looks great on my Smartphone and computer. Font scaling works as expected.

I highly recommend this Kindle book. It is comprehensive and very handy to have in a portable, access-anywhere format.

Not sure what those 1 star reviews are talking about...
By Brent Figiel
...but the formatting of the book looks perfectly fine on my Kindle Fire. No issues at all. This book continues to be a great resource for Lovecraft enthusiasts in getting your Mythos information quickly. This and Joshi's annotated Lovecraft are great for beginners looking for a way into his writing.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6-As with any abridged version, the story is spare, but what it loses in prose, it gains in readability. The easy-to-understand text keeps some of the flavor of the original, but in condensing 27 chapters and more than 300 pages of narrative to 50-plus pages with half as many chapters, much of the long-winded description has been eliminated. However, the modernized spelling, added dialogue, shortened expository passages, large type, and emphasis on fast-paced storytelling will make this classic accessible to a younger audience. The story ends abruptly with Robinson Crusoe's return to England. None of the adventures after his arrival in his homeland-the discovery of riches at his Brazilian plantation, Friday's encounter with the bear, or the attack by ravenous wolves on the trek to France-are included. Nevertheless, the bare-bones telling, combined with more than a dozen of Wyeth's lavish oil paintings (which originally graced the 1920 edition), makes this a worthwhile purchase.

From Booklist
One of the first novels ever written, Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (1719), the classic adventure story of a man marooned on an island for nearly 30 years, is part of our culture. From Scott O'Dell's Island of the Blue Dolphins (1960) to the recent movie Castaway, the elemental situation of the person suddenly alone, who must make a life in a dangerous environment, continues to enthrall all ages. Yet few adults, never mind young people, can wade through Defoe's lengthy tome with its convoluted eighteenth-century prose. So here's a shortened storybook version--retold by Timothy Meis in accessible style, yet true to the spirit of the original and the time when it was first published--in a large picture-book format with clear type, high-quality paper, and more than a dozen unforgettable narrative paintings by Wyeth, first published in 1920 and newly reproduced here in glowing color.

The story begins with the universal quest: the young man in Britain, torn between his safe home and his hunger for adventure, breaks away from his loving father and sails away into the unknown. After a series of harrowing escapes, he's shipwrecked on a desert island. His lively first-person account shows how his intelligence and education help him survive for many years, and how he uses technology, including guns and tools salvaged from the ship. He sets up home, reads the Bible, finds a parrot as a pet, and even devises a calendar to keep track of time. Then one day he finds a human footprint: "Was it someone who could save me and take me back to civilization? Or was it a savage who landed here?" When some "savages" arrive in several canoes, he uses his guns to get rid of them, and he rescues one of their captives, a handsome fellow with very dark skin. Delighted to have a companion at last, Crusoe names the newcomer Friday (since Crusoe found him on Friday). Crusoe teaches "my man Friday" to speak English, fire a gun, carve a canoe, and clothe his nakedness, and they live happily together. Later they rescue a white man and Friday's father from a group of "savages," and, eventually, they all return to their homes.

Defoe is said to have based his novel on the true adventures of Alexander Selkirk (who spent four or five years on an island in the South Pacific) and on accounts of other castaways of the time. The survival adventure is still enthralling. But what about the racism? This is clearly the classic colonialist story, but whose history is it? And how will young people read it today? Is it just boring, politically correct nitpicking to object to the use of the word "savages" throughout the book and even on the book flap? Yes, there are some bad guys among the whites, but even they are called "men"; the dark-skinned people are always known as "savages." How do we talk about this story today? The guns and tools make Crusoe boss, but wouldn't Friday have been able to teach the newcomer some survival skills? Does it never occur to Crusoe to learn Friday's own name and language? Who discovered whom? Wyeth's clear, action-packed illustrations are magnificent. But there's one shockingly jarring scene of Friday groveling in gratitude at Crusoe's feet. When the whites say thanks, they embrace each other.

So, no, the objections are not just P. C. sermonizing. The racism is highly offensive. But the fact that the story is so widely known and has such elemental appeal makes this an excellent book for discussion, especially in classes studying the history of exploration and discovery. Louise Erdrich addressed a similar problem [BKL Ap 1 99] when she commented that although she had loved the Little House books as a child, in rereading them as an adult, she was shocked to recognize that "not only was there no consciousness about the displaced people whose land the newcomers were taking, but also that there was a fair amount of racism." Still, she disagrees with censorship of any kind: "The best way is for good teachers and parents to install racism radar detectors so that kids can make their own judgments, because they're going to have to."

Robinson Crusoe is part of the fine Scribner Storybook Classic series that includes The Last of the Mohicans and Robin Hood, all of which bring readers to Wyeth's paintings. Treasure Island will be out later this year. Hazel Rochman

WARNING: This is NOT the original text
By Joshua Q
Defoe helped to define the modern fictional novel when he wrote about the tales of Robinson Crusoe. The book has a strong religious theme, as was Defoe's intention. However, this version of the text censors out some of the language against what Defoe called the Papist Church (or the Roman Catholic Church) as well as some items which would be considered racially insensitive today (but leaving in much of it as well). I don't understand why this version leaves out some of those parts, as they completely change the story that Defoe intended. I'm not sure that Amazon knows these texts are censored (not the original) as there is no allusion to it in the book's description.

Superior and inspirational reading for adults and teens
By B.C. Scribe
After reading Glyn Williams' trenchant 'The Prize Of All The Oceans' I had an overwhelming desire to read this classic once again. I first read it when I was a mere 10 year old and it completely mesmerized me; I find that it still held the same power over me thirty years later. It is difficult to put this tale down once the title character becomes a castaway on the "island of despair" (as Crusoe refers to it) and he begins the battle against the odds to survive. Facing extreme tropical heat, torrential storms, a dreadful loneliness and the struggle to master some of the simplest of skills we take for granted Crusoe wages his one-man crusade for survival. Beginning his desolate existence steeped in woeful self-pity he slowly realizes through a series of trying circumstances, devotional reading of the Bible and finally relief from his isolated state that the experience proves to be one of reverie. In the process Crusoe becomes quite possibly the most inspirational figure to spring forth from the pages of literature.
Though it is annually listed by literature scholars as one of the 100 finest works of fiction, today primarily adolescents read Defoe's enduring tale as part of their required reading for school; very few others rarely bother with this nearly three century old tale. 'Robinson Crusoe' it seems is a classic awaiting a renaissance of rediscovery by adults who regularly read for either leisure or as a part of continuing education. While the novel's approach to morality may seem a bit old fashioned by today's contemporary standards, the character's awakening to wisdom, inner strength and faith will inspire any reader of any age. Crusoe's ability to steel himself against the onslaught of natural elements, his own self doubts and finally a band of savages who discover his "island empire" should win over even the most jaded of us. This Norton Critical Edition is the perfect package to gain a deep appreciation for this masterpiece of the English language. So do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this book today and transport yourself back to your youth and also to a time long past. It's a journey you won't regret taking.

An adventure, but different than you might expect
By frumiousb
The author of Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe, is generally credited with being one of the first novel writers in the English language. The book is surely an influential one-- spawning countless imitations, derivations, and (in our era) reality-based television shows.

It is billed, quite fairly, as an adventure story. However, it is a very different kind of adventure than the modern action-sequence laden book which readers today may expect. It is an adventure story, but one which centers primarily on mastery and morality.

The morality is placed centrally in the book when Crusoe rejects the advice of his father to accept the happiness of the middle class life to which he was born. Against the wishes of his family, he runs off to sea to find adventure. It is not until Crusoe literally recreates a primitive approximation of that middle class life for himself on his island that he is freed.

Crusoe is also a story about the ability of mankind to master his surroundings through hard work, patience, and Christianity. The combination of these three supports are what allow him to escape captivity in Africa, overcome the deadly obstacles on the island, and finally leave the island itself. His physical prowess and combat skills are significantly less important to his journey than the message of trust and persistance that the decades he spends on the island convey. While this message might need tempering for the modern reader, it is also inspirational and important to read.

If the potential reader is not used to the diction of the time, the book itself may take some patience and persistance. It pays off, in the end, and should be an excellent book for the young teenager (or the not-so-young grown-up) interested in stories of adventure. The child who reads and enjoys My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George would probably be a good potential audience for Robinson Crusoe. For a good life-at-sea duo, you might consider pairing it with Two Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana.

Excellent libGDX book
By John Bannister
I should declare up front that I purchased this book directly from Packt and was asked to review it for them. I was not asked to give a good review, however.

If you are after an in-depth libGDX book then this one is for you. If you also want a comprehensive introduction into the complexities, and potential solutions, of developing an RPG then you get an added bonus, because that is in there too.

There were only two things I do not like about the code. The first was the use of underscores for member variables and the second was the use of a lot of static variables and functions.

One thing I really do like is that the book itself does not reproduce page after page of the code just to fill it out - it explains concepts and then includes snippets. Closely related classes are not reproduced in the book at all, but are mentioned as having to be implemented by the reader.

This is not a "hello world" project, so expect to be challenged.

Good for intermediate programmers
By Christian Dolif
"Mastering LibGDX Game Development" shows the process of creating RPG's really good. The game architecture is shown very detailed. Sometimes it's a bit hard to follow the author because you have to read the source code (which is available for free when you bought the book) when the author adds things to the code but doesn't says anything about it. The book is a great choice for intermediate programmers who want to get a good knowledge about LibGDX and creating RPG's. For beginners it might be very hard to understand.

Solid learning experience (With determination)
By Sael Torres-Diaz
It's a solid book to read IF you have some experience under your belt and are willing to dissect the code from their website yourself. Often you will find that the author is implementing classes that he has yet to go through the process of creating, and that along with the odd naming style of putting an underscore before anything will make it quite a bit harder to read if you're not used to it. Other than that it is a great choice for the intermediate programmer who wants to get more techniques in his tool box.

TL;DR:

Pros:
- In depth analysis of libgdx aspects
- Covers an assortment of problems
- Source code
- Assets

Cons:
- Time lord structure
- Chicken scratch code

Practical and accessible
By Publius
This is the most practical book on Clojure I've seen yet. At this point I've almost completely made my way through it. I bought it directly from O'Reilly (not Amazon) because I wanted it in PDF format.

I think what I like most about this book is that the authors have most often chosen to explain things in reference to scripting languages like Ruby and Python, and from business and mundane-data examples, rather than using examples from mathematics or computer science. This choice has made Clojure's power very accessible and easy for me, coming from a linux (Bash, Python, C) and web development (PHP, Ruby, Javascript), background and without any math or CS degrees. I am very grateful to the authors for writing it in such a down-to-earth way so that I have been able to absorb it easily.

I also enjoyed the extensive chapters on the practical use of the language, for things like web development, database access, tooling, and packaging. Also, their approach to discussing Java interop was very helpful to me not having dealt with Java much in the past.

Their extensive use of footnotes to comment their code examples is very helpful. When I find myself reading a line of example code and wondering why they did it that way, the footnote answers my question clearly and simply. I might have preferred actual inline comments rather than footnotes-- less jumping around in the PDF-- but the content is great.

In general, while reading it, every question that comes up in my mind seems to be answered within that paragraph or the next one (or in a footnote); the overall flow of the book and the path they've taken for building one concept upon another seemed very natural to me.

Even though it's easy to read linearly, I also found it very easy to skip around as well. I found many of the chapters in the Practicum section to be as good or better than the documentation for the projects they describe. The authors seem to account for the fact that readers might do that, and provide links throughout those chapters to earlier chapters of the book. I tend to reach for the book instead of for the documentation for some projects; it's useful as a HOW-TO.

I don't know if people who have a lot of lisp experience or CS degrees would be as grateful for this book as I am. But it has made learning a very powerful language into a fairly painless and straightforward process for me.

If you're coming to Clojure from languages like Ruby, Python, Javascript, etc., I'd recommend "Clojure Programming" as your first step.

A clear, comprehensive, and effective guide to Clojure
By Avi Flax
Before reading this book, I was proficient with Java, JavaScript, Python, and a few other languages -- all primarily object-oriented and ALGOL-derived. Lisp and Functional Programming (FP) seemed alien and bizarre. But after hearing that people were getting real work done using FP with Scala and Clojure, and hearing Rich Hickey, the creator of Clojure, speak at Strange Loop, I was inspired to get over my apprehension and learn functional programming and Clojure.

I decided it would be unwise to try to learn FP and Clojure at the same time, so I first wrote a program using FP in languages with which I was already familiar: CoffeeScript and Scala. It didn't take long for me to build an appreciation for the paradigm.

Once I felt that I had a decent understanding of FP, I asked on Twitter whether anyone could recommend a book, and got a very enthusiastic recommendation for this one from Sean Corfield. It was available under O'Reilly's pre-release program, so I was able to buy and read pre-release PDFs of the book.

The bottom line is that this book gave me a solid understanding of Clojure and enabled me to learn the language and gradually start using it. The concepts are presented in a thoughtful sequence wherein each one builds on the next, and it's made clear how each element of the language relates to the others.

The writing, examples, and organization are all excellent. And the book gets extra points for going beyond just explaining the language and how to use it, by being extra-comprehensive and covering how to really use the full Clojure ecosystem to build really useful software.

This is worth highlighting: if the book had been comprised of only chapter 1, "Down the Rabbit Hole", and the first 2 parts, "Functional Programming and Concurrency" and "Building Abstractions", it would have been an excellent book which I'd be recommending wholeheartedly. The inclusion of the subsequent parts, "Tools, Platform, and Projects", "Practicums", and "Miscellanea" make the book an invaluable resource and a fantastic value.

Ultimately, the book succeeds in conveying not only Clojure the language, but also the Clojure way, best practices, and key resources.

outstanding Clojure introduction for smart programmers
By R. Friesel Jr.
In "Clojure Programming", the preface asks "Who is this book for?" It's for a lot of people: experienced JVM developers, curious Rubyists, dissatisfied Pythonistas... Developers of all stripes that are looking to get introduced to, and become proficient in, Clojure. I myself have been circling the Clojure drainpipe for a while now, very nearly getting completely sucked in on numerous occasions. I've followed no one's advice though--I have not started small, and instead keep jumping into sophisticated middle parts and getting mired. [1] I think I would have benefitted from this book a year ago; I'm certainly benefitting from it now.

At 587 pages [2], "Clojure Programming" is hardly a tome, but it is comprehensive, appreciably thorough, and makes a concerted effort to be accessible to the Clojure and JVM neophyte. That being said, the book is also far from short, and makes no pretenses about easing you into the language: you'll be programming a nave REPL by the end of chapter one. But this head-first approach is one of the reasons to love this book.

Emerick et al. found an excellent format for organizing the book, logically sequencing the material, and peppering chapters and sections with the right kind of illustrative, "koan"-style sample problems, eschewing the alternative of walking you through some contrived and over-arching application built one concept (and thus one chapter) at a time. As such, the book is broken into five sections:

1. Functional Programming and Concurrency (the foundation);
2. Building Abstractions (the sophisticated stuff);
3. Tools, Platform, and Projects (the eco-system);
4. Practicums (Clojure in the real world); and
5. Miscellanea (other important stuff).

What's marvelous about this structure is that you can decide for yourself whether to read it cover-to-cover, or whether to cherry-pick just the chapters relevant to your immediate challenges. What's helpful is that the book cross-references itself for many key concepts. In the thick of chapter one and you don't know what this "classpath" nonsense is? Jump ahead to chapter eight! [3] Deep into chapter nine and you're lost about how Clojure protocols relate to Java's interfaces? A footnote steers you back to chapter six! The care taken to create these kinds of cross-references is tremendously valuable because it allows you to opt-in to some advanced concepts early on, getting a preview of the powerful features ahead of you.

Though "Clojure Programming" is overflowing with thoughtful, detailed, and well-composed information, where it really shines is the "Practicums" section. When I first started skimming the chapters in this section, the first thought that occurred to me was: "Herein lies the true esoterica." I read about Clojure's numerics and mathematics, about its intriguing use of "rationals", about unchecked operations. I read about how to idiomatically implement different design patterns in Clojure. The deeper I got into this section though, the more that I realized that this was not a bunch of "out there" riddles and puzzles whose only purpose was to show off the sparkling fringes--no, this section was to demonstrate Clojure's solutions to "real world" problems, and the kind of advantages afforded you by its functional style. [4] That being said, I appreciated how Emerick et al. were vigilant in observing when different approaches or language features would serve you well, and when you would be wise to avoid them.

A few other items that I feel compelled to point out:

* The chapter on Java and JVM interoperability is strong. Anyone looking to introduce Clojure into their (JVM-based) organization would be wise to memorize this information...
* ...and then also memorize the chapter that specifically addresses how to go about introducing Clojure to your organization.
* As with the other Clojure texts I've read, their is a focus on discussing "idiomaticity", and differentiating between "working" or "valid" Clojure code, and idiomatic Clojure code. Seeing this again makes me wish that more authors writing about other languages put this much emphasis on idiomatic style.
* Also, I am filled with tremendous gratitude that Emerick et al., when they cite Wikipedia at all, cite particular articles as "a jumping off point" or as "a surprisingly good resource" for the subject matter. I have read several books recently that cite Wikipedia as an authoritative reference and... Well, I find that to be in bad form.

I find it easy to recommend "Clojure Programming" to anyone with an interest in the language. There is enough "introductory" material that smart programmers will be guided in the right directions as they get started, but there is also enough detailed coverage that the book will grow right along with you. The chapters on the Clojure eco-system will help to steer you toward the right tools and resources to organize, manage, and scale your projects--as well as how to integrate them laterally within the JVM. Lastly, the practicums give you concrete and balanced approaches to answering some of the questions that you go into the whole endeavor already asking. I will be referring to this book often as I continue my explorations into Clojure.

---

[1] Case study: the first significant chunk of time I spent with the language was with early drafts of The Joy of Clojure: Thinking the Clojure Way. "JoC" is definitely an "intermediate-to-advanced" book.

[2] Not counting the preface and index, which brings that up to 630.

[3] Which, I'd like to add, is currently my favorite semi-layman's explanation of the JVM's classpath.

[4] I suppose this should have been obvious from the name of the section. (What can I say? I got caught up in the details of rational numbers.)
