Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties (Essentials of Psychological Assessment), by David A. Kilpatrick

Practical, effective, evidence-based reading interventions that change students' lives

Essentials of Understanding and Assessing Reading Difficulties is a practical, accessible, in-depth guide to reading assessment and intervention. It provides a detailed discussion of the nature and causes of reading difficulties, which will help develop the knowledge and confidence needed to accurately assess why a student is struggling. Readers will learn a framework for organizing testing results from current assessment batteries such as the WJ-IV, KTEA-3, and CTOPP-2. Case studies illustrate each of the concepts covered. A thorough discussion is provided on the assessment of phonics skills, phonological awareness, word recognition, reading fluency, and reading comprehension. Formatted for easy reading as well as quick reference, the text includes bullet points, icons, callout boxes, and other design elements to call attention to important information.

Although a substantial amount of research has shown that most reading difficulties can be prevented or corrected, standard reading remediation efforts have proven largely ineffective. School psychologists are routinely called upon to evaluate students with reading difficulties and to make recommendations to address such difficulties. This book provides an overview of the best assessment and intervention techniques, backed by the most current research findings.

  • Bridge the gap between research and practice
  • Accurately assess the reason(s) why a student struggles in reading
  • Improve reading skills using the most highly effective evidence-based techniques

Reading may well be the most important thing students are taught during their school careers. It is a skill they will use every day of their lives; one that will dictate, in part, later life success. Struggling students need help now, and Essentials of Understanding and Assessing Reading Difficulties shows how to get these students on track.

THIS BOOK WILL FINALLY GET JOHNNY READING!
By Shawn O'Brien, Psy.D., NCSP
This book was written primarily for school psychologists, but I think any educator who is involved in helping children learn to read would find it beneficial, especially those on pre-referral intervention teams (e.g., SLP's, reading specialists, principals) and also special education teachers. I'm a school psychologist, and for years, helping kids with reading problems has been my passion, and therefore, I have read everything about the topic that I could find, especially publications through the National Association of School Psychologists, as well as classics like "Overcoming Dyslexia," by Sally Shaywitz. Therefore, I thought I was pretty expert in the area of reading, but after reading this book, I realized I knew very little of what really mattered. That is because the reading research is scattered across a large number of scientific journals, with which most psychologists and other educators are not familiar. Dr. Kilpatrick must have spent a tremendous amount of time seeking and synthesizing this research. For example, I knew that deficits in phonemic awareness were the primary cause of dyslexia, but I did not realize there is a developmental progression of sub-skills from basic to advanced, and that no commercially available test measures these skills in a developmentally appropriate way. I also knew that reading fluency/automaticity was critical for reading comprehension. However, I did not realize that the only fluency that actually matters is phonemic proficiency, since the latter is a prerequisite for a large sight word vocabulary (via orthographic mapping), upon which fluency is based. The current standard recommendation for improving fluency is repeated readings, even though such interventions do nothing to improve phonemic proficiency, and therefore, do not facilitate the development of a large sight word vocabulary necessary for fluency. I also did not realize that, despite its essential role in fluency, there is no commercially available test that measures phonemic proficiency. Reading this book also helped me understand puzzling findings I've often observed in schools; for example, why the most widely used reading screening test in elementary schools has so many false negatives, and also why the "best" comprehensive test of phonological processing on the market produces so many false negatives in high school. This book informs school based teams how to do intervention-oriented assessment for EVERY type of reading problem, of which there are several subtypes, at every age and level of reading. It also provides recommendations for interventions based on the assessment results. Most importantly, the interventions that are recommended are NOT the type that will produce a measly gain in reading that is nevertheless statistically significant and thus pleasing to researchers, but still leaves the child two or more years behind grade level in reading! These interventions have been shown by research to produce CLINICALLY MEANINGFUL results with very large gains, and if started early enough, can prevent or cure most reading disabilities altogether. But even learning disabled adults have significantly improved their reading skills through the recommended interventions. If you are serious about helping kids with reading, this book is truly essential. If all schools implement it, maybe Johnny will finally be able to read!

Highest recommendation!
By Amazon Customer
This book bridges the research-to-practice gap better than any other I have read in my career as a psychologist. As someone who has conducted special education evaluations and worked with children with learning disabilities for many years, I have read widely in this field but have never encountered a book so thoroughly researched, well-argued, and clinically astute. I expect this book to have a profound impact on my clinical practice, both in assessment and intervention. Thousands of students stand to benefit immensely from the ideas in this book so I hope it becomes widely-read and widely-adopted.

Wonderful, authoritative book on reading
By Vermont Fan
Wonderful, authoritative book on reading. It is very up to date, cites reputable research from entities not involved in selling curricular materials, and leads to an important understanding about how young children should be taught literacy. We could minimize the number of children who have reading problems ... we just need to rely on good evidence. We examine food labels carefully before we purchase the product, why not pay the same attention to the instructional materials schools choose for K-2 students?

WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE
From the author of Field Notes from a Catastrophe, a powerful and important work about the future of the world, blending intellectual and natural history and field reporting into a compelling account of the mass extinction unfolding before our eyes.

Over the last half a billion years, there have been five mass extinctions, when the diversity of life on earth suddenly and dramatically contracted. Scientists around the world are currently monitoring the sixth extinction, predicted to be the most devastating extinction event since the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs. This time around, the cataclysm is us.

The Sixth Extinction draws on the work of scores of researchers in half a dozen disciplines–geologists who study deep ocean cores, botanists who follow the tree line as it climbs up the Andes, and marine biologists who dive off the Great Barrier Reef. Elizabeth Kolbert, two-time winner of the National Magazine Award and New Yorker writer, accompanies many of these researchers into the field, and introduces you to a dozen species–some already gone, others facing extinction–that are being affected by the sixth extinction.

Through these stories, Kolbert provides a moving account of the disappearances occurring all around us and traces the evolution of extinction as concept, from its first articulation by Georges Cuvier in revolutionary Paris up through the present day. The sixth extinction is likely to be mankind's most lasting legacy; as Kolbert observes, it compels us to rethink the fundamental question of what it means to be human.

*Starred Review* It didn’t take long for Homo sapiens to begin “reassembling the biosphere,” observes Kolbert, a Heinz Award–winning New Yorker staff writer and author of Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man, Nature, and Climate Change (2006). By burning fossil fuels, we are rapidly changing the atmosphere, the oceans, and the climate, forcing potentially millions of species into extinction. Five watershed events in the deep past decimated life on earth, hence the designation “Sixth Extinction” for today’s human-propelled crisis. To lay the groundwork for understanding this massive die-off, Kolbert crisply tells the stories of such earlier losses as the American mastodon and the great auk and provides an orienting overview of evolutionary and ecological science. She then chronicles her adventures in the field with biologists, botanists, and geologists investigating the threats against amphibians, bats, coral, and rhinos. Intrepid and astute, Kolbert combines vivid, informed, and awestruck descriptions of natural wonders, from rain forests to the Great Barrier Reef, and wryly amusing tales about such dicey situations as nearly grabbing onto a tree branch harboring a fist-sized tarantula, swimming among poisonous jellyfish, and venturing into a bat cave; each dispatch is laced with running explanations of urgent scientific inquiries and disquieting findings. Rendered with rare, resolute, and resounding clarity, Kolbert’s compelling and enlightening report forthrightly addresses the most significant topic of our lives. --Donna Seaman

Review

"[The Sixth Extinction] is a wonderful book, and it makes very clear that big, abrupt changes can happen; they're not outside the realm of possibility. They have happened before, they can happen again." ―President Barack Obama

“Riveting . . . It is not possible to overstate the importance of Kolbert's book.” ―San Francisco Chronicle

“Arresting . . . Ms. Kolbert shows in these pages that she can write with elegiac poetry about the vanishing creatures of this planet, but the real power of her book resides in the hard science and historical context she delivers here, documenting the mounting losses that human beings are leaving in their wake.” ―The New York Times

“Surprisingly breezy, entirely engrossing, and frequently entertaining . . . Kolbert is a masterful, thought-provoking reporter.” ―The Boston Globe

“Your view of the world will be fundamentally changed. . . . Kolbert is an astute observer, excellent explainer, and superb synthesizer, and even manages to find humor in her subject matter.” ―The Seattle Times

“Powerful . . . An invaluable contribution to our understanding.” ―Al Gore, The New York Times Book Review

“Natural scientists posit that there have been five extinction events in the Earth's history (think of the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs), and Kolbert makes a compelling case that human activity is leading to the sixth.” ―Bill Gates

“[Kolbert] makes a page-turner out of even the most sober and scientifically demanding aspects of extinction.” ―New York Magazine

“Ms. Kolbert's lively account is thought-provoking.” ―The Wall Street Journal

“[Kolbert] grounds her stories in rigorous science and memorable characters past and present, building a case that a mass extinction is underway, whether we want to admit it or not.” ―Discover Magazine

“Throughout her extensive and passionately collected research, Kolbert offers a highly readable, enlightening report on the global and historical impact of humans . . . a highly significant eye-opener rich in facts and enjoyment.” ―Kirkus (starred review)

“The factoids Kolbert tosses off about nature's incredible variety--a frog that carries eggs in its stomach and gives birth through its mouth, a wood stork that cools off by defecating on its own legs--makes it heartbreakingly clear, without any heavy-handed sermonizing from the author, just how much we lose when an animal goes extinct. In the same way, her intrepid reporting from far-off places--Panama, Iceland, Italy, Scotland, Peru, the Amazonian rain forest of Brazil, and the remote one tree Island, off the coast of Australia--gives us a sense of the earth's vastness and beauty.” ―Bookforum

“Kolbert accomplishes an amazing feat in her latest book, which superbly blends the depressing facts associated with rampant species extinctions and impending ecosystem collapse with stellar writing to produce a text that is accessible, witty, scientifically accurate, and impossible to put down.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Rendered with rare, resolute, and resounding clarity, Kolbert's compelling and enlightening report forthrightly addresses the most significant topic of our lives.” ―Booklist (starred review)

“An epic, riveting story of our species that reads like a scientific thriller--only more terrifying because it is real. Like Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, Elizabeth Kolbert's The Sixth Extinction is destined to become one of the most important and defining books of our time.” ―David Grann, author of The Lost City of Z

“I tore through Elizabeth Kolbert's The Sixth Extinction with a mix of awe and terror. Her long view of extinction excited my joy in life's diversity -- even as she made me aware how many species are currently at risk.” ―Dava Sobel, author of Longitude and Galileo's Daughter

“With her usual lucid and lovely prose, Elizabeth Kolbert lays out the sad and gripping facts of our moment on earth: that we've become a geological force, driving vast swaths of creation over the brink. A remarkable addition to the literature of our haunted epoch.” ―Bill McKibben, author Oil and Honey: The Education of an Unlikely Activist

“Elizabeth Kolbert's cautionary tale, The Sixth Extinction, offers us a cogent overview of a harrowing biological challenge. The reporting is exceptional, the contextualizing exemplary. Kolbert stands at the forefront of what it means to be a socially responsible American writer today.” ―Barry Lopez, author of Arctic Dreams

“The sixth mass extinction is the biggest story on Earth, period, and Elizabeth Kolbert tells it with imagination, rigor, deep reporting, and a capacious curiosity about all the wondrous creatures and ecosystems that exist, or have existed, on our planet. The result is an important book full of love and loss.” ―David Quammen, author of The Song of the Dodo and Spillover

“Elizabeth Kolbert writes with an aching beauty of the impact of our species on all the other forms of life known in this cold universe. The perspective is at once awe-inspiring, humbling and deeply necessary.” ―T.C. Boyle, author of San Miguel

A Remembrance of Things Present
By Matt Mansfield
Ah, the good old days: remember cars that got maybe 13 miles per gallon, sci-fi movies about alien things crashing into Earth to be defeated by military know-how, big game hunting safaris with triumphant pictures, whale steaks on the new food menu, cute bleached coral and lacquered fish for home decoration, traveling abroad was exotic - almost a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Sure you do. And if you're still a little wistful for those times, Elizabeth Kolbert's 2014 book, "The Sixth Extinction," is not going to be very satisfying. It may sound like a new cinema offering but it is far, far from it.

"The Sixth Extinction" is a series of personally crafted portraits of life in its many different forms in flux and, in some cases, ceasing to exist - even as we read the author's words. Drawing on her writing experience with "The New Yorker" Magazine, Kolbert blends knowledge, anecdote and eyewitness details to create a sense of authenticity so the reader feels like he or she is part of experience.

Those seeking more rigorous analysis and exposition should try Scientific American's collections such as the 2014 "Storm Warnings: Climate Change and Extreme Weather" (see my November 3, 2014 "Whistling in a Warm Wind" review on Amazon).

Through thirteen chapters the author presents pictures of various species in crisis, the probable reasons for their present state of emergency and the efforts undertaken to aid and preserve them.

Each chapter has a particular species focal point such as golden tree frogs in Panama, the American mastodon, graptolites in Scotland, coral colonies around Australia's Great Barrier Reef, declining biodiversity in the Amazon, Sumatran rhinos in U.S. zoos and new insights about relationship between Homo Neanderthalensis and Homo Sapiens in Germany.

Interspersed in the initial chapters is the history of the development of various scientific approaches to understanding fossil remains, historical epochs, eras and periods, and the development of evolutionary theory, whether by catastrophe or gradual change (or "long periods of boredom interrupted occasionally by panic").

While still anecdotal, the latter chapters weave some interesting fact-based information, for example:

- Earth has an estimated 50 million habitable acres, of which 27 million have been converted by people for multiple uses such as cities, housing, and pastureland. The remaining 23 million acres are roughly 60% for forests in which various species live and the remaining 40% are mountains, deserts, tundra, etc.
- The various species on Earth are composed of two to seven million for insects, ten thousand for birds and five thousand for mammals, including people.
- Amphibians are the most endangered group followed by reef corals, fresh water mollusks, sharks and rays, mammals and birds.

Along the way, other startling observations emerge: biodiversity is declining not only due to the "old causes" such as hunted to extinction for various reasons but also new ones such as global warming impact on life-sustaining ranges, the loss of habitat space, the inability to regenerate a species due to slower reproduction rate and the rapid vulnerability to new diseases (fungal, bacterial or viral). All of these causes are now achieving a dark and unexpected synergy.

Kolbert is presenting the current conditions as potential for a Sixth Major Extinction of the planet's species. In the prior roughly 500 million years there have been upwards of 25 periods of species extinction, of which five are considered to have been major ones due to breadth and probably rate of surrounding change. Nearly all of these were due to factors beyond the control of the inhabitants at the time: changes in chemical balances, glaciations and global warming due to Earth orbit wobbles, volcanic eruptions and asteroid impact leading to global cooling that killed off many of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

What makes the concern for the next big extinction is that it may be triggered by us - very, very rapidly. At a speed of change far beyond anything that has happened before - be it global warming by burning millions of years of fossil fuels, by eliminating living space on land or in sea for other species, or by sheer carelessness.

Shall we support initiatives for mitigating factors that we can affect such as global warming?

Or shall we fiddle while home burns?

Great as far as it goes; but insufficient coverage of the current mass extinction event
By Michael Heath
"The Sixth Extinction" is one of many fundamentally flawed books on climate change; yet I still recommend people read this book. That's because of the dearth of well-done climate change books coupled to the importance of developing public literacy on climate change.

You would think that perhaps humanity's greatest contemporaneous threat would result in too many great books to feasibly read. E.g., consider all the great books published around 2009 honoring 150 years since Charles Darwin published "On the Origin of Species". I read seven in that period. Yet with climate change we too often suffer through the amateurish (Overheated: The Human Cost of Climate Change by Guzman, Andrew T. [2013]), the overwrought (Storms of My Grandchildren; The Truth About the Coming Climate Catastrophe and Our Last Chance to Save Humanity (Chinese Edition) ), and here a book that insufficiently covers the very topic referenced in the title - "The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History".

Here's what Elizabeth Kolbert does well:
' Defines mass extinctions relative to the background extinction rate.

' Succinctly explains past mass extinction rates to help us better appreciate individual studies that are now being published regarding current findings.

' Provides some good examples of current extinctions that also illustrate why these are harbingers to far worse in the near future.

' Good explanation of the lack of diversity at more northern climes and therefore those regions' disproportionate vulnerability.

' Excellent reporting on migration rates and varying results, including altitude limitations on migration to chase colder climates.

' Kolbert provides a decent explanation on why a warmer world might ultimately result in more biodiversity; but in the short term given current `cold adaptation' of extant life on earth, mass extinction is inevitable in a `business as usual' scenario.

' Kolbert is an excellent writer and good reporter on the events she reports.

Here's where Ms. Kolbert fails:
' Vastly insufficient coverage validating we are currently in a mass extinction event with the exception of her coverage of ocean acidification.

I bookmark ScienceDaily articles that report especially impactful scientific climate change findings. I counted fourteen recent peer-reviewed articles preceding publication of this first edition by a couple of years. Not nearly enough of these findings were covered. That where the very title of the book references our already being in a mass extinction event.

' Failed to more expansively report and illustrate why a small change in climate can have a devastating impact to whole regions [1]. Such illustrations should help people understand that we can't possibly predict all the catastrophic changes that will comes from a fast changing climate; i.e., the "law" of unintended consequences. Such reports would help better align the public's urgency on climate change to the urgency expressed by scientists and scientific organizations.

' Failed to adequately footnote and refer to scientists and studies that she references. For example, on page 166 of the paperback version, Ms. Kolbert refers to a 2004 study on a "species-area" experiment. Both extreme scenarios, the `best case' and `worst case', predict catastrophic extinctions by 2050. Not only is this study not end-noted, the author only refers to the year of the experiments; failing to report the authors' names, the articles they published, and where these articles were published [2]. Inadequately providing citations is always a loss of one star with me.

I learned a lot reading this book. I enjoyed Ms. Kolbert's writing. I wouldn't remove any material from the book. But ultimately, the mostly anecdotal reports of current extinctions are insufficient for a book that promises to report on the current mass extinction event.

1] For example, mountain pine beetles in the Rocky Mountains are killing off millions of acres of lodgepole and ponderosa pines. This is the result of a "minor change" of a 2.7 F warmer region over the past couple of decades. A change that has resulted in an enormous increase in pine beetle procreation rates due to much higher winter survival rates and two reproductive cycles per Spring/Summer/Fall rather than the historical one cycle per year given the shorter winters. The net effect is pine trees dying from up to 60 times higher beetle infestation rates. Mitton and Ferrenberg, "Mountain Pine Beetle Develops an Unprecedented Summer Generation in Response to Climate Warming", The American Naturalist Vol. 179, No. 5, May 2012. doi: 10.1086/665007.

2] I think Elizabeth Kolbert was referencing Thomas, Chris D. & et al., "Extinction risk from climate change", Nature 427, 145-148 (8 January 2004) doi:10.1038/nature02121.

We Have Met The Enemy And It Is Us
By Franklin the Mouse
What science does best over religious beliefs or people pulling theories out of their backside is subject experiments to peer review. You'll never get 100% scientific consensus on anything, but when the peer reviews heavily tilt towards agreeing with certain conclusions, then it's time for us non-scientists to stand up and friggin' pay attention. Ms. Kolbert's 'The Sixth Extinction' highlights key areas which show how humans are quickly driving us towards a mass extinction. Heck, unless you've been living in a cave, there's oodles of evidence in the news on practically a daily basis that shows our planet and wildlife are under enormous stress.

Ms. Kolbert covers the previous five mass extinctions and the evidence showing how they might have occurred. There are about a dozen photos sprinkled throughout the book. (I believe I once dated the Neanderthal holding a pole in one of the photos.) Some of the topics covered in the chapters are the rise of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere as well as causing ocean acidification; the deterioration of our ocean's coral reefs and why they are important; tropical deforestation; and the quickly mounting tally of life forms that are either heading towards extinction or are now extinct. Next to the well-proven theory that a large asteroid killed the dinosaurs, we humans are doing a serious number on all living things including ourselves.

As a parent of two teenage boys, I hate to think what kind of mess they'll live in the not-too-distant future. If you don't give a hoot, still aren't convinced, or actually HOPE for it to come true because you think it will usher in the Second Coming of Christ, then congratulations, you're a myopic, delusional, selfish bonehead. I'm not sure if you could call the book a clarion call to take action, because the damage we've done and continue to do to the planet is immense. Ms. Kolbert has no suggestions on how to reverse or even slow down the demise of so many species. The book is interesting and written for the general layman. Now... if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go crawl into a corner, get into the fetal position, and cry.

The Sundered Worlds
By Thomas R. Skidmore
Michael Moorcock's near-forgotten space opera classic "The Sundered Worlds" is back for a whole new generation. First serialized in the British magazine Science Fiction Adventures in two parts (as "The Sundered Worlds" in 1962 and "The Blood Red Game" in 1963) by influential English SF editor John Carnell, Moorcock introduces the concept of the Multiverse, a series of many universes and realities; of alternate lives and destinies. The Multiverse concept would play a pivotal role in the success of Moorcock's writing career, especially with his tragic anti-hero Elric. The plot of "The Sundered Worlds" seems simplistic on the surface: a mission is undertaken by the hero Renark von Bek to save the various sectors of the Multiverse from imminent universal Armageddon. But buried deep within the Star Wars-like action is a deeper story of a man inexorably and inevitable drawn to a hidden Destiny he can neither avoid nor alter, in spite of his (admittedly) super-human efforts. Renark von Bek goes about his mission with an almost casual, even cavalier attitude, and it is this very attitude of heroic yet resigned resolve that earns him the respect of his many friends, and the grudging admiration of his enemies. Amazing technology is on display as well, many of which became reality: virtual reality, computer tablets, digital displays, and advanced quantum physics. For great, dazzling yet classically-spirited science fiction adventure, "The Sundered Worlds" is a winner.

Terrific book. Great format
By Andrew Katz
This is the best book on SQL Server I have seen. Perhaps this deserves a disclaimer, I am an experienced programmer. Then again, perhaps not. The book covers all aspects of Database programming from design to SQL coding that a software developer might need. For a more thorough treatment of CLR functions I would recommend Dejan Sunderic's text. Everything else is here.

A word about the format. (I love it) Even numbered pages contain theoretical/descriptive expositions of various topics. On the facing odd-number pages the book has well designed examples illustrating the material on the even pages.

The Starting Gate for Eclipse
By Let's Compare Options Preptorial
Amazon's nice selection of Eclipse books, even by this author, can be daunting. You see volumes 1, 2...n..; versions 4, 4.x... 4.n; vogella; java... and !!!!

Cutting through all the fog, THIS BOOK IS BY FAR the best starting point for general and beginning Eclipse use, as well as a great reference for all levels. IOW, even though this is "volume two" you DO NOT need "volume one" to begin learning the Eclipse IDE, this IS it! Confusing? I know. Since I'm targeting this review at beginners to Eclipse development (which is where this book shines), let me detail the frame. First, Eclipse is an open source (freely available free) SDK or IDE. Those initials mean software development kit or integrated development environment-- specifically targeted to Java coding.

When I say Java, I mean Java application development-- meaning writing software programs / apps in Java. An IDE is a kind of "editor" or gui that allows you to write, debug and test drive your programs and apps, or even pieces/ units within them. IDEs themselves have plug-ins, design pattern templates, their own api's, and much more. Before you (as an ADVANCED developer) use those tools, you've got to first learn to use an IDE itself (like Eclipse, DrJava, EasyEclipse, J, Netbeans, Cube-J, BlueJ, tIDE, etc.). Other books, volumes and editions in this series show you advanced techniques for those plug ins and app development; THIS book is a great intro to how they all integrate from square one.

Even though this starts at the beginning, you have to understand at least the basics of OOP, Java, libraries, runtimes, compilers and other aspects of development, or you'll get lost quickly, even at this gentle level. Unlike C#, Java uses bytecode and distributed compilation/ interpreting, so developing in Java has its plusses and minuses, but Eclipse is one of the top open source IDEs for many Java jocks. I predict that in the future, compilers will all be distributed and only "thought of" as a unit (your smartphone doesn't recognize your voice, Google's servers do).

Commercial IDEs can be as cheap as an old $50 C++ IDE from Borland on ebay that includes a compiler, to $1,000 plus for VBA ides that include server licenses (and not all that well supported, being part of .net!). Visual Studio and other cheap/free IDEs also are available for C# if you just want to get your feet wet in practicing the interfaces. IDE career tip: for very specialized (and high paying) projects and careers, consider learning a rarer IDE like object/pascal for the newer delphi compilers-- you'll have a rare skill (like Erlang) that's growing like crazy right now! I love Java, but just trying to help you be rare and specialized.

If you're really serious about getting into or advancing in Java development, you also need to search Amazon for the keywords: Maven, Ant and Git. These topics will help you organize and plan at the project level once you're deeply into versions, and will help you jump out of the trees to see the forest once in a while (figuratively, not the red/green trees and hash tables!!!!--- well, maybe.). These tools help with version control, difference tracking (Delta compression, etc.), project, and other management needs. Why get a separate book on Git or Maven when books like this on Eclipse cover them? Because, in Eclipse, many of the controllable Git features are hidden and automated, and at some point you might want to control them directly. That said, this author does a great job of parsing Git features both automatically and directly for version control.

This book is highly recommended for the nuts and bolts of Eclipse navigation, features and operations, and a great intro to IDEs in general, given that you can download it free for numerous OS's (The Eclipse IDE, not the book! Go to eclipse dot org forward slash downloads); and I probably don't need to tell you the vast number of Java libraries out there to get you flying very quickly on your first million dollar, copyrighted program / Android or IOS app. You really need to read THIS BOOK first before trying to tackle plug ins and advanced API's, unless you're already very familiar with ides in general-- still, this book is about best practices and state of the art features in Eclipse if Java is your juice. I DO NOT recommend this (or any other math or software text) in ebook form, even though I love my fire. When it comes to UML, formulas, diagrams, etc. the ereaders are a true pain to integrate and study, and it is hard enough to learn a new interface as it is. Get the paperback!

EMAILERS' ANSWER: Several folks have emailed saying that if you're really good in Java you don't "really need" an IDE. Well, ok. My humble opinion is that with the many new codecs and distribution profiles (from mobile to distributed, concurrent, web, embedded, parallel, combined paradigm, partially client compiled, etc.) IDEs are "necessary" if you think of them as time and work savers, and like Design patterns, to keep you from reinventing the wheel. Plus, if you're seriously developing multi thousand line code with plug ins, templates, libraries, etc. the version control features alone are a must (eg. compression routines to recognize and save differences only).

Just one opinion, but I value yours also if you're that good, and will stay open minded, thanks for emailing! (Update: re-reading your email, you seem to be talking about bypassing the compiler, not the IDE! This book doesn't cover it, but yes, you can install a syntax sensitive editor in your code that saves code in pcode so you don't have to write (or use) a separate scanner - parser. The user code never gets saved as text scripts, so there is no need to compile if you choose that technique. Folks who do a lot of XML scripting have learned that you can "sim" a virtual compiler with lex/parse tools like antlr.

TWO: "General question, does book cover Groovy, or for that matter, DSLs?" A: I think you're asking whether Eclipse itself covers Groovy, for use in creating your own domain specific languages. YES. You need the GroovyEclipse plug in, and after loading it, you can do everything this text talks about in Groovy, just like Java, including source level edits, highlighting, etc. NetBeans has Groovy support (post 6.5) as native, but both work just fine, and you can access all the cool dynamic features of Groovy (operator overloading, closures, script builders, lists/maps, etc.) that you wish Java had. The JVM runs it just like Java, fully transparent. No, this text doesn't specifically cover Groovy details, but ALL the IDE features are identical for Groovy and Java.

From what I gather, it is an e-book made from blog posts and I really enjoyed the directness of it. It is a real time waster when books start with long and boring introductions. I want the heart of the matter immediately and this book delivers on that.

However, at the same time, and somewhat contradictory, I found it to be a bit short on subjects. I would have enjoyed reading in this succinct format about a few more things in Eclipse, like preferences and plugins.

I do wish this model of monetizing good blog posts and tutorials by releasing e-books is the way of the future. And you should look at buying this book in that light, which is the reason it deserves the highest rating. Lars Vogel's web site and tutorials are always an enjoyment to read.

Great tutorial to getting started!

Great introduction into programming with Eclipse. I really liked the summary of shortscuts in the appendix and the preference settings, e.g. Save Actions, which simplify the life of the developer. The automatic positioning of the semicolon is invaluable.

I also liked the explanation of the creation of my own templates. The advanced debugging tips were also useful for me, e.g. I learned that I can set Breakpoints on classes.
