Laura M. Justice, Ph.D., is a clinical speech-language pathologist and applied researcher in early childhood language and literacy development, communication disorders, and educational interventions. Dr. Justice is Professor in the School of Teaching and Learning at The Ohio State University, is Editor of the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, and is Founding Editor of Evidence-Based Practice Briefi. Dr. Justice's research activities have received grant support from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation, the International Reading Association, the National Institutes ofHealth, and the U. S. Department of Education's Institute ofEducation Sciences. She has received such awards and honors for her work as the Editor's Award for the American Journal of5peech-Language Pathology, the Early Career Publication Award from the Council for Exceptional Children's Division for Research, the Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering from President G. W. Bush, and a Fulbright Scholar Award. Justice has published nearly 100 articles, chapters, and reports on early education and language lliteracy intervention and has authored or edited seven books.
Helen K. Ezell, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist who specializes in the study of child language development and disorders. In addition to her research in child language, she has an interest in the preparation of teacher-scholars in speechlanguage
pathology. Dr. Ezell is affiliated as adjunct faculty with the University of Pittsburgh, where she teaches in the areas of communication science and disorders.

I particularly liked the use of examples that were given

I had to purchase this book for a college course I was taking. Honestly, I don't even remember learning all of the syntax in this book when I was younger. There's a wealth of information here and each chapter has questions to test your understanding at the end. I particularly liked the use of examples that were given; they made the information much more easy to process and remember.

`I have lost my emulation'

So were the words of master painter Jacques-Louis David at the untimely death by smallpox at age 24 of his finest pupil Jean-Germain Drouais: the mutual impact these two painters from the Revolutionary period of France in the mid 1780s was one so palpable that it permeates this magnificent volume by gifted writer Thomas Crow. The original edition of this book was from the year 1995, but this current release is enhanced and expanded and is brought to us through the auspices of The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles.

Crow writes so well that this heavy scholarly document becomes like a novel in his hands. He guides us through the politico-social changes that created such a massive upheaval in France (a subsequently the rest of the world) when monarchy was overthrown by common man to begin the era of democracy. This alteration of the ruling class as the 'father' of the people struck society in various ways. As Crow draws from this phenomenon he shows how important the loss of the father figure was to artists. Each of the three main artists Crow details in this volume - David, Drouais, and Girodet - lost their true fathers at an early age and Crow demonstrates through biographical data and sketches and paintings just how much of an impact these events had on the change in painting that became the norm for neo-classicism.

The book abounds in full color and black and white illustrations of the paintings, drawings, sketches, and prints of the painters of this time. And while Crow walks us through the period of change, sharing provocative examples of the vision of these painters in their reflection of and recreation of myth and history, he always keeps us tuned to the effects of the revolutionary mind on the influences of the painters.

For this reader the chapter titled 'Too Beautiful for a Man' is the quintessential statement of the book and its purpose. Here are paintings such as Girodet's 'The Revolt of Cairo', 'Scene from a Deluge', and his portrait of the 'endowed' Jean-Baptiste Belly'; Guerin's 'Aurora and Cephalus'; and David's 'Leonidas at Thermopylae'. These paintings are each homages to the magnificence of the male physique. A similar study is presented in the chapter called 'The Wounded Warrior' in which Crow first shows us an image of the 200 BC statue of 'The Dying Gaul' and then proceeds to unveil paintings by Drouais (who only painted six canvases in his brief lifetime) of 'The Dying Athlete', 'The Seated Gladiator', 'Philoctetes on Lemnos', and 'Marius at Minturnae', each of which captures the agony of man as well as the beauty of the masculine form.

Crow ends his well-documented book with a chapter on the painters such as Gericault who were obviously influenced by this school of French painters. His summation is riveting. easy read, worthy applying

Maxwell is masterful at squeezing an immense amount of helpful, practical advice into this short, easy-to-read, anecdote-filled book. Your attitude affects so much in your life, and it's one of the few things that you can actually control. A good attitude doesn't necessarily make good things happen to you, but it sure does help. Or you can easily set yourself up for failure by harboring a bad attitude, undermining your own efforts to succeed. A good book to remind us why and how attitude can make a difference.

I would like to first state that this is the first book I read by Maxwell so I wasn't sure what to expect. I don't normally read a lot of books like these and also know that he's written quite a few so I intend to be selective about what I do read.

I enjoyed this book. Would I say it's changed my life radically? No, because I haven't made any purposeful application of it yet. Although it's easy for me to say that I know attitude makes a difference, it's nice to be reminded about how and why that is and I felt John did that very well. I found it refreshing that he states up front that while attitude can be a game changer, it's not everything. It changes the way we approach an issue. The book is, of course, a great reminder about the ways in which it is and can be but Maxwell demonstrates with examples why that is. I especially found his chapters on fear and failure to be insightful, especially when he discusses self-sabotaging behaviors that people commit.

In my opinion, if you sense or have ever been told that you need to change your attitude, you may want to start helping that by reading this book. Granted, it won't turn your world upside down but there are a lot of things in it I found to be thought-provoking about my own attitude and its affects on how I respond to challenges in life.

For serious mental drum kit workout

This is a "thinking drummer's book" - filled with challenging ways to spread the fundamental rudiments across a jazz drum kit. You will likely need to really spend serious time working these exercises to truly internalize the concepts involved and to get yourself to creatively apply the ideas behind leveraging rudimental patterns across the various kit pieces. This book gets you into the right spot - and ANY Morello book is an essential library edition just because of its author! - but the real work comes with what you do with the concepts, not simply playing the particular examples in the book itself. Enjoy!

This book had long been out of print, but available again. If a drummer studies it, and plays the exercises, that drummer will improve. The book is "no frills." There is no DVD, very little text. One must simply work on the sticking and orchestration around the kit to benefit.
