About the Author
Joel Karty earned his B.S. in chemistry at the University of Puget Sound and his Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry at Stanford University. He joined the faculty at Elon University in 2001, where he currently holds the rank of associate professor. He teaches primarily the organic chemistry sequence and also teaches general chemistry and physical chemistry. In the summers, Joel teaches at the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program through the Duke University medical center. His research interests include investigating the roles of resonance and inductive effects in fundamental chemical systems and studying the mechanism of pattern formation in Liesegang reactions. He has written a very successful student supplement, Get Ready for Organic Chemistry, Second Edition (formerly called The Nuts and Bolts of Organic Chemistry), published by Pearson.

This author teaches organic chemistry in the simplest way possible that seems easier than learning 2+2. He writes unlike other organic chemistry books that I've read and I learned quickly and efficiently from his book. He stresses the important elements of how to learn organic chemistry and it has helped me in both organic chemistry 1 and 2. The practice problems were super helpful because it helped me apply the concepts. You'll need this book if you are taking any organic chemistry classes in life.

This was such an amazing book! it was very detailed, and I was able to understand what I read. There was also plenty of practice questions covered from each chapter, which helped to continue my growth and success in Organic Chemistry.

The theme of this book may be unknown to many people, including those Civil War Battlefield junkies. The taking ['looting'] of Southern Civilians crops & livestock, by the Confederacy happened to thousands. This single act alone, turned many loyal Confederates against the Confederacy. CSA President Jefferson Davis tried to get the planter class - as well as everyone - to grow more crops to feed the army. Instead, most of the planters grew more cotton. When Confederate soldiers (under Gen. Earl van Dorn) tried to impress crops & live stock from the Planter class, the planters were outraged & complained to CSA President Jefferson Davis. Davis felt he was forced to protect the elite, upper-class planter class. The majority of the common people of the South, had to endure four years of starvation. At the outbreak of the war, approximately 200,000 Southern people from the upper-South joined the Union army, along with 100,000 from the lower-South. Adding to this 500,000 Slaves fled to the North during the war - 180,000 joining the Union Army & 20,000 joining the Union Navy. Forcing the Southern civilians to bear the brunt of the war, while the planter class acquired profits, further alienated Southerners. Situations such as The Free State of Jones, existed across the Confederacy. (Jackson Country, N.E.Alabama seceded from the Confederacy in 1864, as well as the "wire-grass region of S.E. Georgia).

I was born and raised in Jones County, Mississippi. I am 78 yrs old and recognize many names in the book. I attended Jones County Junior College in Ellisville and no one ever talked of this part of history. I knew a lot of Knights who must have been related. It is a different take on what the south was fighting for.

Every Audit tool just contains Check Lists (Yes/No)and does not tell you what is next. This Book Collects Information, Evaluates it, Analyzes it,and Recommends the Action Plans. While you are using it, you are learning and teaching. I wish the forms were made on a CD, that would have been marvelous. However, it is still the best HR Audit Tool. Go for it...

Very Informative

When I bought this book, I was expecting to be the stories of various cannibal killers throughout history. Indeed the book does cover, in pretty good detail, about 5 or 6 cannibal killers. However, the book also spends several chapters talking about the psychology behind cannibal and serial killers.
The various stories of the killers were chilling and a must read. The psychological portion of the book is a little "dry" to read, but explains a lot about cannibal and serial killers.

This book is a well written, even wryly humorous at times, account of some of history's notorious cannibal killers. It describes all one would want to know about the individuals portrayed, and it ends with some summary information about what is known or theorized about cannibal killers as a species, so to speak. I recommend it to anyone with the stomach to inquire into this disturbing stuff, who is interested in an interesting and very readable overview of the subject.

Ya, that pretty much sums it up, But it was such a great book. I could not put it down, from start to finish i was hooked. A Wealth of Information

This is a peer reviewed collection of essays on the perils of going to sea. While the essays are written by a diverse group of people, primarily university connected, they have been reviewed by the other contributors and by other experts in their fields. The main approach of the book is to provide the statistical background of the accidents, injuries, and acts of piracy in which ocean going ships were involved.

Upon receiving the book, my first action was to read Chapters 6 & 7 on Ship Piracy. Unfortunately these chapters did not disclose any guaranteed not to fail techniques that would stop a practice that has been going on for thousands of years. But they did provide some background information on the number of incidents, their financial and human impact, their locations and more. I do not know of another source of this kind of information.

In turn, the other chapters provided similar information on other subjects such as those listed above. Here is a wealth of information. While the cost of the book is high, to collect this information would be extremely time consuming.

Glorious deco detail.

Architectural photographer Carla Breeze has focussed her camera on the best seventy-five Art Deco buildings across the Nation and produced a glorious book of color photos that perfectly captures the style. I really liked this book because she concentrates on the architectural detail of each building (with 450 photos) and in many cases, when this detail is on the outside, it is just not viewable from the ground.

The introduction has an interesting eighteen-page photo section dealing with materials: metal, concrete, terra cotta, mosaic, glass, wood and stone. I found this very useful when looking at the images. Each building starts on the spread (though some have more pages) with a street address and some background text and captions for the photos. The elegant layout does not interfere with the wonderful buildings (a tip of the hat to book designer Robert Wiser). Could anyone take a better photo of the stunning Niagara Mohawk Power headquarters in Syracuse on page seventy-three, I doubt it.

To complement this lovely book have a look at Rediscovering Art Deco USA: A Nationwide Tour of Architectural Delights by Barbara Capitman, Michael Kinerk and Dennis Wilhelm, a methodical nationwide survey, though it concentrates on commercial buildings rather than houses. If you are Deco spotting on the road leave a space in the glove compartment for David Gebhard's excellent The National Trust Guide to Art Deco in America (Preservation Press) if it's not in this book then most likely it's not worth looking at.

Superb book on American Art Deco Architecture

This is the finest book presently available on American Art Deco Architecture, in my opinion. Beautifully photographed and printed in Italy (288 oversize pages in full color), it's a must have if you have an interest in Art Deco and/or Architecture.

All the finest American examples are here, the Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation Building in Syracuse, the Chrysler Building in New York, the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge, and the Eastern Columbia, Wiltern Theatre/Pellissier and Bullocks Wilshire Buildings in Los Angeles, just to name a few. Most of the buildings are photographed from the outside as well as inside, with numerous detail photographs of doors and moldings.

Carla Breeze is an architectural photographer by trade and she does a superb job with this book, I especially like the fact that perspective control has been used in the photographs (all the vertical lines are parallel) which makes for a much more pleasing look. The sleek and modernistic style of Art Deco, popular during the 1920's and 1930's, has yet to be matched, in my opinion, and Ms. Breeze captures the essence of it skillfully.

JAZZ AGE BEAUTY

This is quite simply a fantastic book, the images ara crisp and well presented and the text is easy to navigate. Every major Art Deco building in American is chronicled and presented in its best light. It is such a relief that so many of these great buildings have survived, unlike many other architectural styles, Art Deco has always had a huge throng of admirors, people who loved the style and fought very hard to help preserve it. Everytime I set foot in one of these great buildings, like the Louisiana State Capitol or Radio City Music Hall or the Chrysler Building I am reminded of the shear artistry that went into these buildings and am disappointed at the austere, crass styles that have followed. I highly recommend this wonderful book, frankly it is the best I have seen on American Art Deco.
