Better title would be: "Exam Dictionary"

This is a dictionary of terms you may see on the 79. Exam "Facts" is a bit of a stretch.. if you want a hardcopy of a 79 dictionary, you should buy this. There are no questions, just definitions - all of which could be found on investopedia.

I wouldn't recommend this to a friend.

Just definitions aren't going to get you through the exam. You need more information to get there. I was looking for something between this and the heavy stuff from Securities Trading Corp, but this just doesn't cut it.

Recovery Hints

It is important to be clear what recovery means for adult children. Alcoholism is a disease. People recovering from alcoholism are recovering from a disease. The medical model is accepted by all responsible folks working in alcoholism treatment.

Being the child of an alcoholic is not a disease. It is a fact of your history. Because of the nature of this illness and the family response to it, certain things occur that influence your self-feelings, attitudes and behaviors in ways that cause you pain and concern. The object of AcoA recovery is to overcome those aspects of your history that cause you difficulty today and to learn a better way.

To the degree that none of us have ideal childhoods and to the degree that even an ideal childhood may be a cause for some concern, we are all recovering to some extent or other, in some way or other. Because there are so many alcoholic families and because we have been fortunate in being able to study them, it is possible to describe in general terms what happens to children who grow up in that environment.

To the degree that other families have similar dynamics, individuals who have grown up in other �dysfunctional� systems identify with and recover in very much the same way.

Recovery Hints for Adult Children

All folks in AcoA recovery need to learn the Al-Anon principle of detachment regardless of whether or not they are recovering from addiction or are living with an addict. Until you do this, you can go no further. Detachment is the key. Because of the inconsistent nature of the nurture a child receives in an alcohol family system and the child�s hunger for nurture, many of you are still joined to your parents at the emotional hip. Even if you are no longer with them, you continue to seep their approval and are strongly influenced by their attitudes and behaviors. You will need to learn to separate yourself from them in a way that will not add to your stress. This is one of the primary goals of the Al-Anon program.

�What you learn about yourself as you are growing up because a part of who you are and how you feel about yourself. No one can change that but you. Your parents, even if they recover and treat you differently, cannot fix what makes you feel bad about yourself. You may start a new and healthy relationship with them in the present but no amount of amends on their part will fix the past. That is why dwelling on their part in your ongoing pain will not get you through it or past it. Your present difficulties are your problem. To put the focus outside yourself is to delay your recovery.

Emotions that have been held down for years and years will come to surface. That is why it is suggested that if you are recovering from an addiction, you need to focus on that first so that you will not be tempted to relieve those feelings in destructive ways. You will go through a number of powerful emotions in your recovery. It is part of the process.

Not everyone goes through the stages of the process in the same sequence, and many of you may block some of those feelings. There is no �right� way. I just tell you about the process because those feelings may surface without your conscious direction and frighten you. And they will resurface many times with each new discovery. The recovery process is different for different folks. Only you can determine the way that will work best for you.

Your immediate response to reading this book may be:

Relief. The realizations that you are not alone and that you are not crazy will be freeing. It may be a life-changing event.

Pain. The awareness of the amount of your suffering and your powerlessness may overwhelm you along with the knowledge that you have been living a lie. It will be similar to the extraordinary pain you experienced as a child before you learned how to numb out.

Anger. It is not unusual for all the anger that you�ve been sitting on for all these years to surface and you may become fearful of your own rage.

Grief. The losses that you have experienced have to be grieved for, and you may feel this level of pain as well. You may believe that if you begin to cry you will never stop.

Joy. Going through the process eventually will allow you to experience a freedom that you have never felt before. When you are an adult you can be the child you were unable to be when you were a child.

Opened up some things for me that I wasn't aware of and I am an adult child of an alcoholic; albeit I was raised in a broken home. I was surprised how even though Dad wasn't really in our home living with us that he really WAS THERE and so was his alcoholism. It affected all of us. I'm 57 and I'm just now learning how his addiction shaped our everyday lives even into adulthood. How I cope with stress, how I don't trust people straight away, how I second guess myself constantly and how confusion, fear, manipulation, and various forms of abuse keep entering my life and the lives of my other immediate family members, and how I've chosen specific types of people who practice manipulation on me because I'm an easily identifiable peson who can be controlled and moved about as if I'm a pawn on a chess board just by them watching and listening to me- I am a people pleaser and will let anyone walk all over me. I rarely have the courage to stand up for myself because I frankly I don't know how. I don't know how because I wasn't allowed to and have been given demeaning messages about myself, my charachter, my ideas... all of my life. I have no self esteem so they know I can be controlled by the way I act. So this book and a few others have helped me to say "No more" to these people. I'm able to recognize who my manipulators are better and to back away quietly and then I begin to easily control the relationship on my terms now. I've got a long way to go but this book really did help me.

Very good tool

This is a very insightful book and helped me see/understand my behavior(s) in life. It's one of those books you read, get an insight and have to put it down because it can be very raw dealing with the "why's" of how you react today given your environment during your childhood. But, you do heal which is the whole point of purchasing this book. Is it the "end all, be all" book? No, but it is a very good tool to help anyone raised by an alcoholic/someone who abused alcohol to understand, acknowledge then move forward and past this in life. It sounds so clich� to say "be gentle with yourself," but it is necessary. You can't help the situation you were placed in as you were growing up, but you can make a decision to not let it impact you today or in the future. Your parent's drinking was not anything you did, but something they chose to do that impacted your life - right or wrong - it just is and get on with enjoying the life you have now. I will say, to date, it's been the best tool I've found in my overall recovery, but I also believe I allowed myself to drop the bags of the past and start to live. I hope you do too. It wasn't you. It was "them."

Here are the missing puzzle piecesw

I was warned this book can make many people feel stuck in childhood pain. And while the door to the past must be opened I felt the author presented so many useful tools for processing and healing the confusion of growing up in an alcoholic home there was no way to blame getting stuck on the book.

2 of the chapters really clarified why certain areas of my life have never worked well and why failed patterns were set in motion and more importantly how to change that in time. Great book!

How the Communist Party could have come to power in Greece, but was ordered not to

Most people in this country believe the lie (told by both sides during the cold war) that Stalinism equals communism, and that it's revolutionary. Stalinism was the rule of a privileged bureaucracy, and the Communist Parties around the world were not meant to make revolutions, but to support the rule of that bureaucracy. Revolutions were viewed, at best, as bargaining chips for getting concessions from the imperialist powers.

This book explains how the Greek Communist Party led the fight against the German occupation, and could have easily come to power, but Stalin's deals with the US and Britain led to him ordering that party to welcome British troops into Greece (this happened in many other countries). The British handed Greece back to the monarchists. The Communist Party had yet another opportunity; they were popular enough to win a democratic election, but following Stalin, didn't take part in it.

Later on, for various reasons, probably a major one being to kill off the best people in their party, they started a small scale guerrilla operation, which gave the Greek government the opportunity to deal them major blows in what turned into a civil war.

To understand what Stalinism was (and to the degree that it still exists is), I suggest starting with two books by Trotsky: The Revolution Betrayed and The Third International after Lenin.

To understand the difference between the Stalinist Soviet Union, and the revolutionary government of Cuba, there are many good books. I recommend starting with Cuba and Angola: Fighting for Africa's Freedom and Our Own and Visions of Freedom: Havana, Washington, Pretoria, and the Struggle for Southern Africa, 1976-1991 (New Cold War History).

For the formation of modern Greece, from the very little i've read, I recommend The War Correspondence of Leon Trotsky: The Balkan Wars 1912-13 and Salonica, City of Ghosts: Christians, Muslims and Jews 1430-1950.

And for why Stalinism collapsed, but the US didn't gain by it, read New International No.11: U.S. Imperialism Has Lost the Cold War.

Excellent historical documentation

I was interested in reading further about the Greek Civil War. I am a Greek American and a friend had the book but written in Greek which I could not read. I found it extremely interesting and informative and recommend it to anyone interested in modern history.

Bruce Lee's take on taking what is useful while discarding the useless.

Jeet Kune Dō (henceforth, JKD) is Bruce Lee’s “styleless style” of martial arts. Its literal meaning is “the way of the intercepting fist.” However, Lee cautions one against attaching too much significance to that name (or any name) in the book’s final chapter. Long before “Mixed Martial Arts” became a household word, Lee was constructing this fighting system that borrowed heavily from the Western traditions of boxing, fencing (conceptually speaking), and wrestling as well as from Kungfu, Savate, and Judō/Jujutsu. While JKD employs techniques and concepts from these systems, Lee remained adamant that no good came of organized styles built on fixed forms. In fact, that might be said to be the central theme of the book. That is, each fighter should begin with sound fundamentals and build an approach that is ultimately his or her own.

“The Tao of Jeet Kune Do” is an outline of the martial art. In many ways, it looks like and reads like Lee’s personal notebook. It’s illustrated with crude (but effective) hand drawings of the type one would see in a personal journal, and they are annotated with hand-written notes. (My biggest criticism is that on the Kindle version the graphics are largely unreadable. I’d recommend you get the print edition if you can, which is large-format paperback as I recall.) The book combines a philosophy of martial arts with nitty-gritty discussion of the technical aspects of combat. The philosophical chapters bookend the technical ones.

As others have pointed out, there’s not much that is new in either the philosophical discussions or the technical ones. Lee’s value-added is in how he states these concepts, how he selects the concepts of value (informed largely by a love of simplicity and a hatred of dogma), and the weight lent to the lessons by Lee’s great success story—albeit in a life far too short. Lee was a man of charisma, and one who approached endeavors with gravitas.

Now, I can imagine some readers saying, “Why are you recommending a book on real fighting by a movie martial artist? Would you recommend a book on how to conduct gall bladder surgery from someone because they were on the first two seasons of ER? Would you take martial arts lessons from Keanu Reeves because his moves looked pretty nifty in The Matrix?”

I’ll admit that there is nothing about making kungfu movies that makes one particularly competent to give advice on close-quarters combat. However, as I said, Lee seemed to devote himself entirely to everything he did. Consider the Bruce Lee physique, which seems so common place among actors today (no doubt in part chemical and in part owing to live-in Pilates coaches) was virtually unseen in the 70’s. Yeah, he probably had good genes, but he must have trained like a maniac as well. Lee’s constant mantra of “simplicity” lends him a great deal of credibility. (It should be noted that pragmatism is not a virtue in the movie-making industry.) Lee demonstrates that he’s given a lot of thought to the subject and done the training when he discusses technical concepts. For example, while he gives high praise to Western boxing and emulates boxing moves in some regards, he also notes that boxers are insufficiently cautious owing to the rules/equipment of their sport (a comment—it should be noted--that can be leveled against any sport martial art.)

The technical material is organized in four chapters. The chapter on “tools” deals with the techniques of striking, kicking, and grappling. A chapter on preparations explains Lee’s thoughts on faints, parries and manipulations. There is a chapter on mobility that discusses footwork and various types of evasions. The last technical chapter discusses the approaches to attack, focusing heavily on JKD’s five types of attack.

“The Tao of Jeet Kune Do” is undeniably repetitive, but that repetition has value in hammering home key concepts. It’s also consistent with the JKD philosophy of not getting into a great deal of complexity, but rather drilling home the basics. There’s an old martial arts adage that says, “One should not fear the man who knows 10,000 techniques as much as the one that has done one technique 10,000 times.” This seems apropos here. Besides, the concepts that are repeated are often worth memorizing. e.g. Simplify. Eliminate ego. Avoid fixed forms. Be natural. Don’t think about building up as much paring away.

I’d recommend this book for martial artists of any style. Non-martial artists may find the philosophical chapters interesting, but may not get much out of the list-intensive technical chapters.

Its a great read for any one is interested in Bruce Lee ...

This book is intense with information on how to kick ass and how to be effective in combat. It is an anecdote to Bruce Lee's life as a Martial Artist, and thought process. This book not only teaches techniques but it also teaches principles that are related to the Zen mindset along with Confucianism . Its a great read for any one who is interested in Bruce Lee and Martial Arts. Reason why I gave it this rating is because I don't fully engage in combat myself. I do believe the ideals and concepts, it is interesting to think about Confucius theories. I haven't read it completely but from what I read, it was worth the money.

Great for self teaching

I think the reason Jeet Kune Do has never really taken off as the system relies on more speed than anything else. People who have read about Bruce Lee know he was incredibly fast. My take on it is that JKD is a hybrid martial art based on Wing Chung Gung Fu and Boxing of which Bruce Lee admired Muhammad Ali for his style and skill.

None of that however takes away from the style. It's great source material and learning the moves, strikes and parries is fantastic. As Bruce Lee stated, you use what works and don't use what doesn't. I'm not trying to be the next King of Martial Arts, I want to learn martial arts my own way without going to one of the ridiculous strip mall dojos. I can learn from the creator's own writings and notes.

About the Author
Mark Robert Anderson is the author of Faithsongs: Ancient Psalms for Today and lives in Vancouver, Canada. For over ten years, he lived and worked in the Middle East, teaching in a university and seminary. Anderson has been a member of Jacob's Well, a faith-based organization seeking mutually transformative relationships with marginalized residents of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, and for two years he was part of a team helping homeless people find sustainable housing and employment. He has an MA in Islamic studies from McGill University and an MA in Christian religion from Westminster Theological Seminary.
