Not quite what I expected
By Dustin B.
The book seems to be full of excellent information and an expansion to the actual textbook, however I thought this was going to be the solutions manual. Obviously this was my mistake and not the companies. I do however wish that there was a way to get the solutions manual for the book to assist with the problems from the book.

Good practice
By Jillian Schmutz
In addition to having the solutions worked out from the book, it also provides some other good practice questions. They have helped me a lot in my Biochemistry class and I have noticed that my teacher takes some questions straight from the self test for her exams.

Effortlessly read and influence your boss's and customers' true thoughts and intentions!

Announcing the fastest path to unprecedented business growth

For 25 years, Joe Navarro interrogated career criminals, terrorists, and witnesses for the FBI. As a former agent in counterintelligence working with the most deceptive and untrustworthy people on earth, getting to the truth was a matter of life or death.

What worked best for him was using body language and nonverbal cues to magically influence his clients. By wielding this awesome power, Joe was able to extract the exact information he needed to get to the truth and keep America safe.

And if it's potent enough for the FBI, it's more than powerful enough to enable you to command a presence in your own business. To influence colleagues, customers, and vendors. And to achieve the tangible results you want to ensure profitability and long-term growth.

Introducing Joe Navarro's newest program: Your Hidden Power: Using Nonverbal Intelligence to Propel Your Business or Career to Excellence.

Throughout four CDs and a DVD featuring an eye-opening Question and Answer session, Joe personally teaches you how to master nonverbal intelligence, the ability to interpret and use nonverbal signals-in poker terms, "tells"-in business to assess and influence others.

No DVD
By Ms. George
DVD would not work in my DVD player which is able to play blu-ray as well as DVD so I don't know what that's all about. Must be old technology that made the DVD for this program. As for the audio....if you're in sales, political negotiations or thinking of becoming a professional poker player or international banker, I would think the information might be of benefit, or even if you're concerned about the hidden motivations of someone in your orbit who you're not feeling quite sure of this material might help you to get a clearer picture of who you're dealing with. Good for anyone who wishes to study human behaviour.

The author argues that, contrary to the opinions of many 'experts', the Internet has not removed the need to understand proven marketing principles. The topics covered include: market research; fixing a price; getting publicity; designing your own adverts; running an exhibition stand; writing a sales letter; buying print; after-sales customer care; and what makes a good Web site. Based on Dave Patten's extensive experience, "Successful Marketing for the Small Business" is essential reading for anyone with a new company or an established small firm who wants to expand, providing fresh ideas and removing the need to bring in expensive consultants.

Fiber optic communications developed very quickly after the first low-loss fibers were produced in 1970. Operational fiber systems are now common, and new installations and applications appear continually. Communication by fibers has taken over many of the functions previously performed by copper-based systems and extended them significantly. Fibers have become an enabling technology in the information society in which we live. They work together with the remaining copper applications and the growing wireless infrastructure to meet our expanding communications needs.

Fiber technology has matured sufficiently so that many books have been written on the subject. Some of these books are quite detailed in terms of theoretical and mathematical content, and the beginner could find the level difficult.

This text is intended to be less difficult, while still bringing to the reader the information necessary to understand the design, operation, and capabilities of fiber systems. Important theoretical and mathematical results are given without accompanying lengthy proofs. However, results are explained in physical terms when possible and appropriate, and extensive tables and figures are used to make those results readily usable. To provide a realistic view, numerical values are given for the ranges of typical device parameters.

When the first edition of this book appeared in 1984, fibers had already crisscrossed much of the United States and many other countries to deliver telephone messages between the major exchanges. By 1988, when the second edition was published, the land-based long-distance fiber telephone network was nearly complete, and submarine fiber telephone cables were being installed beneath the major oceans. In addition, fiber optic local-area networks (LANs) were in development. When the third edition went to press in 1992, over 10 million kilometers of fiber had been installed worldwide, undersea cables were being constructed, and installation of fiber LANs was increasing. By 1998, when the fourth edition was published, numerous submarine fiber cables covering the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and many smaller seas were operational. In addition, numerous tests had been completed for bringing fiber to all homes, holding out the promise for expanded services to the individual subscriber. With this fifth edition, we note several new developments. The demand for more transmission bandwidth (particularly for Internet and business applications) has required design of fiber systems carrying information at terabit-per-second rates over great distances. Metropolitan area networks (MANS) have become significant parts of the fiber industry. Bringing fiber connections to the home is still a goal, but an elusive one. Economic considerations have slowed progress in this direction.

It is the insatiable demand for greater bandwidth that makes this fifth edition necessary. The fundamentals have not changed, but new technological advances and improvements have emerged to satisfy this demand. I have attempted to work these new ideas into the previous edition with as little disruption as possible.

This is an introductory book. No background in fiber optics or in optic communications is assumed. Only the simplest concepts from algebra and trigonometry are invoked in explaining the characteristics of fiber systems. Appropriate background material on optics, electronics, and communications is introduced in the text as needed.

This book was originally based on a set of notes I developed and used for numerous short courses on fiber optic communications. Participants in these courses had training ranging from two years of technical school through the Ph.D. level. Jobs varied from designer to board chairman. Attendees included personnel from industry, government, and academia. Individual backgrounds were in chemistry, physics, and many areas of engineering. In addition to the short course presentatior3.s, I have taught this material to over 1,500 electrical engineering students at the senior and first-yeargraduate level. The course has been taught over television for more than 20 years. In the last few years it has also been available as an Internet-delivered class.

The professionals benefiting from this book include practicing design engineers concerned with the selection and application of components and with the design and evaluation of systems. Knowledge of the entire system is useful for the device designer as well. Others involved in fiber optics, such as high-level engineering-decision makers, project managers, technicians, marketing and sales personnel, and teachers, can also obtain valuable information from the material presented.

The organization of the book is as follows. Block diagrams of entire fiber optic systems are presented at the outset. This identifies the components of fiber systems, providing motivation for their individual study in succeeding chapters. Chapters 2 and 3 contain a review of important results from the fields of optics and wave travel. This basic information is needed for an understanding of fiber optic devices and systems. Chapter 4, on integrated optics, introduces the technology of combining optic components onto a single substrate. The integrated optic waveguide provides an excellent, simplified model for propagation of light in a fiber. Chapters 5-9 present the main devices encountered in a fiber optic system. These are the fiber, the light source, the light detector, the couplers, and the distribution networks. System considerations appear in Chapters 10-12, where modulation formats, the effects of noise on message quality, and system design are covered. The last chapter includes examples of operational systems. In that chapter, the design information developed throughout the book is applied to realistic problems.

I expect the reader who has mastered this material to be able to design and specify systems and to choose and evaluate such system components as fibers, light sources, detectors, and couplers. Commercially available subsystems, such as complete transmitters and receivers, will also be amenable to evaluation by the techniques presented in this book.

This new and fully revised edition of Fiber Optic Communications incorporates significant advances made in the fiber industry since publication of the fourth edition. Because the fundamentals of the technology have remained the same, the number of changes is moderate. Nonetheless, the changes and additions are significant. Added or expanded topics include the following: Raman amplifiers, erbium-doped waveguide amplifiers, arrayed waveguide gratings, electroabsorption modulators, optical microelectro-mechanical (MEMs) components, dispersion compensation, tunable light sources, tunable filters, optical time-division multiplexing, dense and coarse wavelength-division multiplexing, increased utilization of the optical spectrum, and emphasis on external modulation. A new table showing the current spectral band classification scheme has been added. Small-form-factor connectors and nonadhesive splices are described. In addition, the discussions in a number of sections were modified to improve the clarity of the presentation.

Because numerous colleges adopted the initial text for an undergraduate course in fiber optics, a homework problem set was inserted in the second edition. New problems have been added, and several of the old ones have been updated for this new edition, making this text's use in the classroom even more desirable. Some problems are merely "plug-in"-type questions, intended to give the student practice and confidence in understanding of the material presented. Other problems take more thought and might even require finding and reviewing material from other sources. Answers to most problems appear at the end of the book, and a new solutions manual is available for instructors.

Many new references have been added. The bibliography and periodicals listing at the end of the text provides a resource for further study. The bibliography includes both older "classic" fiber optics presentations and several newer ones that have appeared since the last edition of this textbook.

I find that the first seven chapters can be covered in a one-semester course. This introduces all the major system components to the students, allowing those who have mastered the material to enter productively into the fiber industry. The last five chapters, on more advanced topics, can be covered in a second term. To simplify the mathematics and reach a wider audience, many of the results presented in the text are not fully derived. Instructors of well-prepared students, such as seniors in electrical engineering programs, may wish to fill in the derivations to deepen student understanding.

FIBER OPTIC SOFTWARE

All technical workers and students have access to personal computers and the Internet. Because of this, many groups have developed software to illustrate fiber-related phenomena and to aid analysis and design. Several such programs are available through my home page (www.fulton.asu.edu/~palais). Some of these are available on CDs for instructors adopting the textbook. In addition, PowerPoint slides covering much of the textbook material are available on CDs to assist lecturers.

ONLINE COURSE AVAILABILITY

A two-semester course covering the material in the textbook is available online (and on CDs or DVDs) for university credit, for continuing education credit, or for self study. The online version contains lectures by the author, demonstrations, homework, and exams. Contact the author for information (joseph.palais@asu.edu).

it's a pretty good book
By Omar A.
This is a very thorough book, it has a large number of examples, problems, and tables with everything you might need. It is logically structured and well written. However, it completely skimps on the math. Almost no derivations are shown in any of the chapters, formulas are just pulled out of nowhere.

Overall, it's a pretty good book. But if you're interested in knowing where things come from, buy something else. I'd recommend it for the not-so-mathematically inclined electrical engineering junior/senior.

Good for learning about fiber optic technology
By meowfast
I was looking for a book on fiber optic technology that had a lot of practical info and wasn't too technology in the "text book" sense.
This book fit the bill, it covers the technology without boring the hell out you with derivations of equations and semiconductor physics.
I would recommend this book.

Quick Study onf Fiber Optics
By Jeff Petermann
I have read many books looking for quick information regarding fiber optic systems and this book is by far better than any others in terms of giving you the "need to know" basics and principles. I like how clearly the background information on optical is presented. Some other reviews have aptly pointed out: 1) If you are a fiber-optics professional and want in depth treatment of specific issues, you may not find it here. However, if you are like most engineers and need to go from a 0 to 65% expert quickly for making decisions, this book is EXCELLENT. Better than others by far in terms of clarity! 2) The background info on optical does assume you have had some basic physics including in order to breeze through it. It is still a good starting point even if you haven't. I actually understood some things better after reading this book versus what I remembered from EM/physics courses. A great book.

OTHER COMEDIANS TELL JOKES. PAUL MOONEY TELLS THE TRUTH.

For more than forty years—whether writing for Richard Pryor and Saturday Night Live or performing stand-up to sold-out crowds around the country—Paul Mooney has been provocative, incisive . . . and absolutely hilarious. His comedy has always been indisputably real and raw, reflecting race issues in America, and this fascinating, fearless new memoir continues that unapologetically candid tradition.

While other stars soared only to crash and burn, Paul Mooney has stayed chiefly behind the scenes, and he’s got a lifetime of stories to show for it. As head writer for The Richard Pryor Show, he helped tear down racial barriers and change the course of comedy. He helped Robin Williams and Sarah Bernhard break into show business. He paved the way for superstars like Eddie Murphy. Few have witnessed as much comedy history as Mooney; even fewer could recount it with such riotous honesty and depth of insight. He reveals the truth about his celebrated partnership with the brilliant, self-destructive Richard Pryor, from their first meeting to the very last joke, and reflects on some of his most notorious moments.

Decades ago, Paul Mooney set out not just make audiences laugh but to make them think. Black Is the New White is his blisteringly funny, no-holds-barred memoir of how he continues to succeed wildly at both.

CHAPTER 1

I'm sliding into a booth in a coffee shop on Santa Monica Boulevard, slapping the table to wake Richard Pryor from his hangover nod.

"Man," I say to him, "I just saw a lady so pretty, somebody should suck her daddy's dick for a job well done."

Richard stares at me. Early afternoon, too early for Richard. I smell the brandy he doses his coffee with. He is a little slowed-down by all the poisons in his blood, but even slowed-down Richard Pryor is quicker than any other human being on earth.

He laughs. I'm not saying Richard just laughs like an ordinary person laughs. I mean he laughs. His face lights up like a Times Square billboard and his whole body wags like a dog happy to see its owner.

You know you can die happy when you can make Richard Pryor laugh. It's this huge blast of appreciation, hipness, and intelligence. He gets it. His laugh is like ripping open a bag of joy, letting loose a storm that blows you head over heels. It is that powerful.

The greatest comics -- and Richard is bar none the greatest -- always have the greatest laughs.

Later on, as the hard living takes its toll and the MS takes over, most of Richard's laughs will turn into fits of coughing, as though he's trying to hack up his liver. But a Richard Pryor laugh is still and always will be like getting a high five from God.

California yellow sun and Pacific blue sky. That September day in 1968, Richard and I are in Duke's Coffee Shop, the original one, in the old Tropicana Motel. Two dudes, two dudes, like Richard starts one of his routines. We are the only black guys who can make the scene in Hollywood. We are groundbreakers, accepted at all the clubs, invited to all the parties. When we break into it, Hollywood is still a closed, racist town. The place has never seen anybody like us. We are fearless. We go everywhere. We break down barriers. We still get harassed by bigots and cheated by the system, but it never stops us.

Later that night my wife, Yvonne, gets dressed up and we go to Troubadour on Santa Monica to hear Richard perform his stand-up routine. He's a different comic when I am in the audience. He hears my laugh and he shifts gears, elevating his act to a higher, edgier level. I can tell he is trying to make me laugh, but I'm not going to give it up that easy. I make him work for it. He pushes himself.

From the stage of the Troub that night, I hear Richard do the line I gave him earlier in Duke's coffee shop.

"Coming here tonight, I saw a woman so motherfucking beautiful gorgeous that it made me want to suck her daddy's dick for a job well done."

The joke kills. The way Richard tells it, it kills. The audience practically vomits laughter.

Later that same night -- or is it early morning by then? -- Richard tells me to hold my arm out.

"What for?"

"Just hold it out, motherfucker."

He slips a watch on my wrist. A good watch -- I can feel its heavyweight mass on my arm -- a $10,000 beauty. The kind of watch you call a timepiece.

"What's this for?"

"The bit," he says.

"What bit?" I play dumb.

"The suck-her-father's-dick bit."

"Oh, that," I say. "That's just you and me talking. I could hardly tell if you were awake when I told you that."

"Take the fucking watch. You don't like it, motherfucker, sell it. Take the money, Mr. Mooney."

He always calls me that. Mr. Mooney. Off that character on the The Lucy Show.

I take the watch.

The funniest man on the face of the earth wants me to write for him. It begins to click. I think: This thing we have, this Batman-and-Robin thing, can somehow turn into something that means money and good times for both of us. I toss lines to Richard. He puts them out to the audience. The audience flings money at him. Richard throws money at me.

The truth is, it's never about the money for me. I love Richard. I am his biggest fan. I get off on him doing one of my jokes. It means so much to me. I want Richard to be happy and to succeed. My loyalty is to Richard, and my relationship with him is authentic, as though he is my brother. On all of Richard's albums, you can hear me laugh. I always laugh long and loud.

Those first days together in 1968 are the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Absolutely Genious!!
By Charles H. Brown III
This makes for a tremendous read. It's an absolute page turner and a must have for both Mooney lovers and haters alike. As usual Paul Mooney pulls no punches in this project. Not wanting to give too much away, he goes indepth about his personal and professional relationships w/ Richard Pryor as well as many other of Hollywood's (and "Homeywood's") biggest comedians. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Brilliant and long-overdue!
By Martin Perna
I am a 34 year old fan of Paul Mooney's who grew up on All in the Family, Richard Pryor, In Living Color, and other works that Paul Mooney has lent his brilliance to, but didn't match the material to the face until a few years back on Chappelle.

Paul Mooney's work and analysis on America is some of the most important analysis out there. This book gave a sincere and candid look "behind the curtain" as Mooney writes, into his life in Louisiana and Oakland, discovering his talents and self-confidence, and breaking into Hollywood on his own terms, much of that with his right hand man Richard Pryor.

There's a lot more to write about, but I certainly can't do it justice. Buy this book and educate yourself about Paul Mooney. America will be better off for it!!

More Depth Please
By ozcanuck
First things first. Mooney's brilliant and a real original in a world where there aren't many originals. The book is well written and easy to read. It has a good mix of humour and behind the scenes stories.

Second thing. It's not all about him. This is more a book about Richard Pryor than it is about Paul Mooney. And given that Pryor was his best friend and collaborator, means that the book is worth a read. Mooney is surprisingly honest and "real" about Pryor's personal life, given that he obviously has enormous affection for the man. That fact alone means Mooney did a great job on the book.

The only thing I wish the book had was more detail. There's a lot of surface area covered and there would definitely be room to expand and for Mooney to go deeper.

I'm not asking for lurid details or a "tell all" trashy autobiography -- just a bit more "heart" to go with the reportage. For example, when the death of his son is covered less than half a page, and the death of Pryor on two pages - you have to ask yourself why we don't get more detail. He does a great, insightful (and emotionally affecting) job of talking about Pryor burning himself up but seems to pull his punches on a few other areas that could be fleshed out.

But to close this review let me go back to what I said at the top. Read this book, you won't regret it.

Our Right to Drugs: The Case for a Free Market, by Thomas Szasz

.In Our Right to Drugs, Thomas Szasz shows that our present drug war started at the beginning of this century, when the American government first assumed the task of protecting people from patent medicines. By the end of World War I, however, the free market in drugs was but a dim memory, if that. Instead of dwelling on the familiar impracticality or unfairness of our drug laws, Szasz demonstrates the deleterious effects of prescription laws which place people under lifelong medical tutelage. The result is that most Americans today prefer a coercive and corrupt command drug economy to a free market in drugs.

Throughout the book, Szasz stresses the consequences of the fateful transformation of the central aim of American drug prohibitions from protecting us from being fooled by misbranded drugs to protecting us from harming ourselves by self-medication--defined as drug abuse. And he reminds us that the choice between self-control and state coercion applies to all areas of our lives, drugs being but one of the theaters in which this perennial play may be staged. A free society, Szasz emphasizes, cannot endure if its citizens reject the values of self-discipline and personal responsibility and if the state treats adults as if they were naughty children. In a no-holds-barred examination of the implementation of the War on Drugs, Szasz shows that under the guise of protecting the vulnerable members of our society--especially children, blacks, and the sick--our government has persecuted and injured them. Leading politicians persuade parents to denounce their children, and encourage children to betray their parents and friends--behavior that subverts family loyalties and destroys basic human decency. And instead of protecting blacks and Hispanics from dangerous drugs, this holy war has allowed us to persecute them, not as racists but as therapists--working selflessly to bring about a drug-free America. Last but not least, to millions of sick Americans, the War on Drugs has meant being deprived of the medicines they want-- because the drugs are illegal, unapproved here though approved abroad, or require a prescription a physician may be afraid to provide. The bizarre upshot of our drug policy is that many Americans now believe they have a right to die, which they will do anyway, while few believe they have a right to drugs, even though that does not mean they have to take any. Often jolting, always stimulating, Our Right to Drugs is likely to have the same explosive effect on our ideas about drugs and drug laws as, more than thirty years ago, The Myth of Mental Illness had on our ideas about insanity and psychiatry.

From Publishers Weekly
The "war on drugs," charges Szasz, is a hypocritical moral crusade, a pretext for strengthening the state and scapegoating deviants. It is also racist, he asserts, pointing out that blacks are arrested on drug charges at a rate far out of proportion to their drug use. In a hard-hitting, controversial polemic, the well-known critic of psychiatry ( The Myth of Mental Illness ) advocates a free market in drugs, both for pharmaceutical medicines (including opiates) and for substances like heroin and marijuana. Szasz believes that state-sanctioned coercions to protect people from their own vices are futile and violate our fundamental rights. Futher, he maintains that labeling drug abuse as illness medicalizes a social problem and helps turn drug abusers into lifelong patients. In his blueprint for decriminalization, states could ground motorists whose driving ability is endangered by drug use; he also supports compulsory drug testing in occupations where a worker's impairment jeopardizes public safety.

From Kirkus Reviews
Szasz (Psychiatry/SUNY at Syracuse) at his abrasive best, skewering the shibboleths of the War On Drugs and giving historical context to the current national hubbub. The prohibition of drugs abrogates our constitutional right to property; Americans have lost the freedom to control their bodies; until 1914, Americans had unrestricted access to drugs of their choice without government control of the market: Thus begins this reasoned and passionate treatise, in which Szasz denounces both the prohibitionists (``the War On Drugs is itself a giant quackery'') and the legalizers--``paternalistic prohibitionists'' whose agenda, the author says, is to transfer control of drugs to the medical system and to continue prohibiting substances, albeit only certain ones (e.g., tobacco rather than marijuana). After a scathing indictment of Nancy Reagan's ``moronic anti-drug slogan'' and her encouragement of children who report their drug-using parents to the police, Szasz dissects a cast of antidrug crusaders (Father Bruce Ritter, Betty Ford, Kitty Dukakis, William Bennett) and concludes that drug education is the ``name we give to the state-sponsored effort to inflame people's hatred and intolerance of other people's drug habits.'' Turning to legalization proponents--Lester Grinspoon, Ethan Nadelman, Eric Sterling, William F. Buckley, Jr.--Szasz analyzes their proposals as new prohibition schemes. Why do we fear making drugs freely available? Because people would choose ``an easy life of parasitism over a hard life of productivity'' and become ``drug-crazed'' criminals? According to Szasz, economic productivity, crucial for the survival of society, has ``nothing to do with drugs but has everything to do with family stability, cultural values, education, and social policies.'' And, as for crime, it is caused not by drugs but by their prohibition. Places the rhetoric and the players in clear positions on the board, whether or not you agree with the Szasz prescription. -- Copyright 1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

"While never departing from the moral principles surrounding the issues of drug use, Szasz makes his point in direct, simple, and occasionally astonishing fashion, namely, that every American has the right to possess and use drugs with the same freedom that attaches to any other specie of property.... What is so compelling and provocative about this book is its rational and coldly logical treatment of the issues from within an internally coherent and not unreasonable perspective of the individual and our contemporary society. Thus Our Right to Drugs can and ought to cause us to reconsider our own views about the autonomy, dignity, and moral responsibility of the individual, and the sphere in which the constitutionally empowered and constrained government of the United States may function legitimately."-Northwestern University Law Review

"U.S. citizens have a right to personal property: drugs are property, therefore we have a right to obtain and use them when we want them: the U.S., however, has become a therapeutic state that restricts the availability of drugs: furthermore, drug use is labeled a disease and blamed for many crimes and untoward events that would not happen if drugs were freely available . . . He frequently states there is no need to control drugs--but he does not mention the many lives formerly lost to children's remedies laced with opium or to vaccines that, due to manufacturer accident, contained poisons. He maintains athletes should be allowed to use drugs freely to make competition fair. After reading such arguments, you might assume he even favors drug use while piloting a car or airplane; yet three paragraphs before book's end, he allows that these activities should be drug-free. Szasz does make some good points. It's hard, for instance, to argue against this pronouncement: The War on Drugs has had many undesirable consequences, not least among them the mass production of experts on drug abuse."-Booklist

"Szasz (Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, State University of New York, Syracuse) holds numerous awards and has written many stimulating books on mental illness. With this book he challenges US society to take a fresh look at its drug problem and the way in which its government is responding to the misuse of drugs by some of its citizens. Szasz describes how the current debate on drugs is based on a collective ignorance of the facts and issues and on inability to learn from history. He then goes on to cover issues such as the rights citizens rejected; liberty versus utopia; drugs as scapegoats; the cult of drug disinformation; the lie of legalization; perils of prohibition; and the burden of choice. Szasz makes a persuasive case for a reevaluation of US drug policy within the context of liberty and human responsibility in a democratic society. This book is well written, the arguments are clear and concise, and the logic effective. Excellent notes section and a very useful bibliography. Must read for anyone seriously interested in drugs and how US society is managing them. All libraries."-Choice

DRUG TRUTH
By TinsleyGreySammons
I purchased my first copy of OUR RIGHT TO DRUGS almost twenty years ago. I have purchased many copies since and will never be without a copy. OUR RIGHT TO DRUGS has been instrumental in the creation of AMERICA'S FORSAKEN PROMISE. (AMERICA'S FORSAKEN PROMISE can be examined online. Simply Google: scribd and search for it.)

No American concerned with the demise of constitutional American liberty that began in earnest in 1912 should be without a copy of OUR RIGHT TO DRUGS and AMERICA'S FORSAKEN PROMISE. Getting the pursuit of the idea we call America back on course must begin with an across the board repeal of de facto Drug Prohibition. Crush that abomination and the precedent will cause other unlawful powers to fall like a row of dominoes.

This is a very well written book. I have used it for research in my own writing. I recently purchase 2 copies after an attorney friend asked to keep my original book.

Great for a reference book. Buy the older addition.
By Nicholas K.
Very clear and concise, yet comprehensive enough to serve as a manual. Of all the books I've read in grad school (economic development/urban planning), this is one of the best and most useful books.

I doubt the "new edition" is any better, though. I would buy the older edition if I had to buy it again, which is significantly cheaper. It said "new content with social network analysis," but there is no index item for social network analysis and I haven't found it yet in the book.

The bible of local economic development planning
By James J. Allen
This is the bible of local economic development planning. This is the fifth edition. I have read the previous four edition and the information in this edition is worth the cost. I recommend it highly to all practitioners of economic development regardless of their years of practice. It is great information for those new to the profession as well as people like me with decades of experience.

I needed this book for a graduate class, and I will admit we didn't use it for a lot but what I did need it for in Ch. 5 & 6 it was very useful and became my bible for the second half of the semester. If you are working on an economic development plan this book would be a great resource to have.
