DR. SNOW Carol Saline

Larry Lavin was as much an enigma to his neighbors as he was to the FBI. When the outgoing young dentist and his reserved, pretty wife, Marcia, moved to the Main Line suburb of Devon and into their quarter-million-dollar white-brick colonial home in 1982, they were just twenty-seven years old and by far the youngest couple on Timber Lane, a long winding road of large, custom twenty-year-old homes on beautifully landscaped wooded tracts. Larry had a dental degree but no job, and he didn't seem to be looking for one either. Yet without any visible source of income they seemed to have more money than anybody else on the quietly affluent block where wealth was never paraded and definitely took a back seat to respectability. A retired Navy admiral lived across the street from the Lavins and John Eisenhower, the son of a former United States president lived next door. His wife, Barbara, wondered how this "awfully pleasant young man" could afford to buy a house in an area where most families were enjoying the financial fruits of middle age, then go on to install expensive additions like a pool, a greenhouse, and a solar heating system. While there was the usual gossip, most of the neighbors accepted Lavin's explanation that he'd gotten into the record business in college and had become very successful managing rock bands.

Dr. Lavin made a point of reinforcing his successful image by inviting neighbors like Mrs. Eisenhower into the tastefully decorated house and proudly showing them the framed gold record hanging in the bedroom he'd converted to an office. Usually the gregarious dentist did the house tour, happily chatting about the marvels of solar energy and his plans to remodel the recreation room, while Marcia Lavin kept to herself and puttered about the kitchen. Larry was always the friendlier and more visible of the two. He spent a lot of his time gardening and encouraging neighbors to borrow his tools or offering to help them with chores like putting in a new azalea bush. When he discovered that the retired admiral across the street was also a dentist, he made a point of walking over to discuss some new technique he'd just read about in a dental journal. The admiral thought it odd that someone so interested in dentistry didn't seem interested in working at it, until Larry mentioned he was looking around for the right opportunity. He finally found it that spring about a year after he'd graduated, when he bought a small practice in Philadelphia that catered to patients on public assistance. Based on the elegant life-style he'd established, the neighbors viewed his dental practice as more of a rich man's hobby than an economic necessity.

Indeed when FBI agent Chuck Reed visited Dr. Lavin at his unpretentious office early in 1983, the dental practice was in better shape than Lavin's drug business. He'd probably sold one thousand kilos of cocaine in the last five years, and if he included the money pocketed by all the principals in his ring, the total earnings came to nearly ten million dollars. His personal share of that had been a million annually since 1981. Money wasn't the problem; it was management. Brian Riley, a kid he'd brought down from New England to buy coke for him in Florida and distribute it out of his Philadelphia headquarters, was threatening to walk out. That left him with only Bruce Taylor-another New Englander, a tough biker type and cocaine addict with tattoos on his forearms. What little brains Taylor had brought with him into the world were well on their way to being fried by all the cocaine he used.

Great book. Very well written by an established journalist. Same story as "Doctor Dealer" by Bowden. Both are great in their own right. Buy it..

Great look at the Philly coke biz in the 80's

Being from philly, i know alot of the characters in this book. that being said, i know alot of the characters in alot of gangster books written about philly, and alot of them suck or are a bunch of lies. this one is an exception! it's true, interesting and very detailed. so detailed that there's a chapter that basically tells you step by step how to re-rock coke. Carol Saline did a great job. i was impressed. AAAAAAA+++++++

also, 'doctor dealer' is pretty good too. it was written by mark bowden, the guy that wrote 'black hawk down'. both authors are local philly writers.

This is a fascinating story, but I liked Mark Bowden's book on this subject more. I bought this one mainly because it has some photographs, whereas Bowden's book did not.

Good non-technical encyclopedia. Easy to read. Trusted known scholars. Could be stronger with more documentation. I have a Biblical Studies degree and bought these for my son who is becoming more of a student of the Bible without college studies. I bought original edition (1997) in four volumes for myself years ago. This current edition is handier in a two-volume edition. This may be the best "lay person" Biblical encyclopedia resource that I know. I recommend these to anyone wanting to have a handy help for understanding the Bible.

Stevens' latest and best

I was hoping that this book would be as good as the author's previous two, but I was wrong. It was even better. Stevens is one of the top researchers in the field of hidden Nazi technology, and his two previous books, "Hitler's Flying Saucers," and "Hitler's Suppressed and Still Secret Weapons, Science, and Technology," are must haves in this area, along with Joseph Farrell, Nick Cook, and Igor Witkowski.

This book is written in more detailed fashion than the author's previous books, which were fairly detailed already. He states that this is his last book on this topic, which I hope is not true, as his work is very good and has shed much light on the secret Nazi empire which continues to this day.

Where he departs from Farrell is in his more detailed assessment of the fictions of Wilhelm Landig, which is usually regarded as pro-Nazi hype. Stevens goes to some lengths to show how there is some evidence, although no solid proof, of many of Landig's claims. His analysis is compelling, and there are enough solid bits of evidence to make a reasonable person take notice. The areas of flying machines, atomic research, and submarine development are the main technological arenas focused on in this book. Stevens dishes up quite a bit of solid evidence for technology far in advance of what we are usually told the Nazis developed.

He also goes into quite a bit of depth on Otto Skorzeny, the most visible link between the 3rd Reich and the modern Nazi International. Skorzeny is linked quite openly to current "terrorism," and his movements and activities after the war are covered enough to further shore up Steven's themes in the book.

A must read if you are interested in WW2 history and how it has influenced events which continue to this day.

Secrets of WWII and the Cold War Unveiled

Most people, as victims of the public school system, have no idea how vast, all-encompassing and destructive WWII was. That's why nearly 70 years after its end that we still have countless new books chronicling "new" discoveries, events and people of the War. What many historians have been afraid to touch the secret undertakings of the Nazis before, during and after the War. Sure, you have the fanciful fascination in film and novels with their quests for relics and esoteric knowledge. But their scientific endeavors, technology and influence in the Cold War have been often ignored. Why? That last part, the Cold War, that's why. Even as we were putting on trial Nazis and continued to "hunt" them up until the present, we were using others, sometimes setting them free from jail and erasing their past, to contain and fight the Soviets. There's a lot more to the standard "Project Paperclip" story that we are usually told.

Now, decades later, and with the Cold War decades dead, more people are studying this era and its secrets (see The Dead Hand, 15 Minutes, Lab 257, LBJ and the Conspiracy to Kill Kennedy). There is still some trepidation to explore the Nazi end of things by mainstream historians, but that may be changing (Grey Wolf). In part thanks to writers like Stevens (see his Hitler's Flying Saucers and Hitler's Suppressed and Still-Secret Weapons, Science and Technology), it is no longer a "fringe" topic.

In this volume Stevens expands upon and updates his previous books. New material on secret bases and U-boats, the latest on Hitler's UFOS and some insight to what happened after the War. This is an excellent conclusion to his trilogy of books and the best in the series. Sure, some is speculation, but why continue to hide the past? Now that the War is long dead and the Cold War quickly becoming (unfortunately) forgotten, it is time for the secrets to be unburied and history set straight. The time for lies and deception is over. Only an open history allows for a prosperous future.

Mr. Stevens: Don't let this be your last book.

Enlightening & riveting as well. The problem is that readers may find it hard to accept the "coded" messages of Wilhelm Landig and Admiral Donitz. I still have to go over Mr. Steven's references to put the whole picture together. As well as Dr. Joseph Farrell, Geoffrey Brooks, Philip Henshall & Friedrich Georg's Hitler's Miracle Weapons. Which Mr. Stevens was a major contributor to. Obviously all of Mr. Steven's work needs to be furthered as more documents surface to the general public for official historical record. The hidden history of Nazi technology is becoming clearer due to Mr. Stevens' books & the German Research Project. Readers must Google that latter title to send away for his catalogue about the vast work that he has amassed. Readers, please check if that catalogue is still availible. Please Mr. Stevens': You've attained a great level of mechanical reference knowledge due to your toil. There's much more work to be revised and refined in this subject. Hopefully, a collaboration will and should occur with any/ all of the aforementioned authors to epitomize all your efforts in this subject.

`Understanding now that you're ready, but I already been gone...'

Snapped left us stunned with Misa murdering Steven for molesting her son, Shane, and a jilted Camille informing Frankie at his mistress, Gillian's home that she's pregnant with his child. A paralyzed Baron has been released from the hospital into his mom's care while his sister abandon's him blaming him for their father's death. Misa is jailed with a high bond because Frankie is furious and refuses to listen to the horrible allegations against his murdered baby brother, Steven and pushes Camille further away placing fault on her shoulders. Dominique finally finds her run a way daughter, Octavia, but is stunned with the revelation for her drastic actions. Dominique has quite a few decisions concerning Octavia, her incarcerated boyfriend, Jamel, that's about to be released and new feelings for business associate, Archie. Toya is still as hard as nails, but is thrown off her mark when she comes face to face with her estranged father, while reluctantly peeling off a piece of her shell with her persistent atrocious looking neighbor Russell.

Precise and perfectly executed scenes with an explosive intensity that's brutally honest. Ms. Brown skillfully uncovers the numerous layers of the characters to challenge the original preconceived notions. Superbly depicted scenarios that emphatically endears the characters even more than before and their current plights. The storyline flows like a musician composing a poignant classic tune. Tracy pens a phenomenally riveting tale of love, life, family, loyalty, devotion, change, hope, redemption, and acceptance versus shame, betrayal, jealousy, manipulation, abuse, murder, pain and humiliation. Snapped was a good read, but personally I felt as if the author struggled because she was in a gloomy place at that time. But in reading Aftermath, I can rejoice with her because she has stepped back into the marvelous light and it's reigning down on her! GOD bless you Tracy! Extraordinary! You did this gurl, you did this! MOS DEF!!! Bravo!!!

Bust this book wide open!

In the beginning it took me a while to get familiar with the characters from Snapped (volume 1). I had read a lot of books in between so each person hadn't jumped out in front of me.

In this book I was able to dig deeper into the minds of Shane, Frankie, Camille, Misa, Celia, Toya, Gillian, and the rest of the crew. Each character was shown in a different light. While some were favorable, some were portentous. I went through a series of emotions like sympathy, loathe, joy, anguish, and an occasional side eye.

Aftermath: A Snapped Novel was a definite page turner! I took my Kindle EVERYWHERE. Every chapter was better than the previous. With that being said, I wanted to dig even deeper! The ending left me with nothing but anticipation for a third volume of the Snapped series. Thank you Tracy Brown, you rock!

Excellent Follow-Up Novel!

I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book after I finished reading Snapped! in January. It was well worth the wait. Tracy picks up right where she left off and does a great job of developing the interwoven story lines of each character.

A couple of parts of the book were predictable, but it was mostly full of twists and turns just like Snapped. I think that Tracy Brown teaches a lot of lessons through these characters - lessons about forgiveness, love, betrayal, and redemption. It was a page-turner for me and the Kindle edition was pretty good. I like that the female characters found their strength and the complexity of the male characters was revealed. I still can't get over the choices of Camille's husband, but hopefully there will be another follow up that tells Gillian's (the mistress') story.

Tracy Brown is definitely my favorite urban author. I wish more people new how well-crafted her works are. So many urban novels are predictable and poorly written, but Brown has true talent.

A Moving and Brilliant Play

The play's main narrative line tells the story of the Salem witch hunts which took place in Massachusetts, 1692. At a deeper level, Miller raises several powerful and important questions about human life and morality. But the play's most amazing quality is that it is not "deep" or "philosophical" by traditional standards. Miller has, in a short and easy-to-read manuscript, opened the door (or maybe I should say he presents the reader with a mirror) to modern political life.
The play is essentially a crtique of McCarthyism and the the communist scare of the 1950s. Miller saw the parallels between the witch hunts and the McCarthy trials, and found the witch trials to be a compelling vehicle for discussing modern events. Key themes include:
1. People gaining absolution from the powers-that-be by confessing the sins of others.
2. The power of community rituals, such as confession.
3. The role of political opposition and the consequences of compliance (passive or active).
4. The consequences of a polarized world views and mass hysteria.
These are just a few of the themes. The play is quite clearly a great tragedy, but remains a tragedy for our times. Through characters we can connect with, Miller convincingly shows us that the lessons from the witch hunts still apply. As a reader, I am convinced that Miller's play remains relevant and powerful in the twenty-first century. Miller has left me with questions, regarding world events in 2002 and 2003, that I did not have before reading the play.
I read this play in only a couple hours. It is compelling, engaging, and difficult to put down. Personally, I feel this text stands a great chance of making it onto my "top ten" list of best manuscripts. I highly recommend this play.

Frightening Possibilities

As usual, Arthur Miller was in rare form when he wrote "The Crucilble." Although on the surface it is about the Salem Witch Trials, Miller's true inspiration came from the Red Scare that plagued Hollywood in the middle of the twentieth century (and included his pal Elia Kazan). The fact that Miller wove factual history with the hysteria of his day makes "The Crucible" all the more chilling.

Throughout the course of the play, a collection of teenage girls 'confess' to having seen various women and men of the town of Salem with the devil. This hysteria sweeps over the town as even the authorities fall under the sway of these lying young girls. Caught in the middle of these hysteronics is the Proctor family - John and Elizabeth, who have struggled in the past, but are trying to rebuild their marriage. They are rent apart when Elizabeth is suspected of being a witch. John hopes to clear his wife's name, but only manages to make matters worse for both of them.

The hysteria experienced in Salem is chilling in the fact that these sorts of witch hunts occur today, in all different areas of society. "The Crucible" shows how easily people can be swayed, with the barest of evidence, to believe something that is false. Miller's play is extremely well-written and informative, and almost too frighteningly real.

a great recording

I used this recording this year while teaching "The Crucible". My students loved it!! The emotion conveyed by the cast is SO much better than the typical monotone voice that students use while reading out loud. Even though there were some small parts that are skipped when following along with our textbook, it was completely worth it (and the parts skipped were very small - it was very easy to read it aloud if necessary).
