Decent Diff EQ Matlab Book

I used this book for 2 different Diif EQ classes. In the first class I barely used it at all except for one project. In the 2nd class I used it for 3 different projects and read more in depth into the book. It is fairly dull, but does explain how to do the problems well. If you have forgotten how to use Matlab like I had by the time I was taking Diff EQ, this is a good textbook that will help remind you how to use Matlab while also teaching some application to the math and engineering world.

Not a book, but a short article.

It took me less than 10 minutes to read this "book" from beginning to the end. The content of this "book", at very best, can pass as a short blog post.

While I agree with all the 7 ways the author lists, there is no elaboration, no full-length samples or even examples, and nothing concrete. The underlined word in the title, "immediately", is quite misleading.

At the end of this short article, the author encourages you to take his online course with 50% off its list price. Whether or not you take his class, it is quite clear that this "book" alone is woefully inadequate for increasing your wiring score, or your writing in general.

A tired and preachy autobiography from one of the first queens of disco. This is the kind of celebrity autobiography that serious readers have come to dread--the ``become famous, hit bottom, find God'' kind. We're told all about Gaynor's ``dark'' past, which included two abortions, drug use, and marital problems, but all this has become rather trite. Gaynor's tendency toward clich‚ is only compounded by the extremely poor detail that is given about any of these experiences. The abortions are mentioned without anything about the discovery of pregnancy; the drug use seems limited completely to marijuana--rather minor in an age in which cocaine and especially crack have taken a much more serious toll. Gaynor is also unable to turn the camera outward, with her analysis of disco music and its impact on popular music in general limited to a few pages. What hampers this autobiography beyond anything else, however, is Gaynor's relentless proselytizing for her newly found Christianity. While normally a reader might feel happy that a person who had suffered had found solace through religion, Gaynor's endless insistence that only through Jesus can one find salvation is egregiously offensive. Even her own brother, one of two of her siblings to join the Nation of Islam, is depicted in the book as being brushed off by her for rejecting Christianity. How this jibes with Gaynor's admission that her own husband is not yet born again is unclear. All of this, on top of the conversations that she claims to regularly have with God (in which the Almighty is an active participant), seems just a little too crackpot for believability. It's ironic that Gaynor states, ``There's been a lot of interest in a seventies revival in recent years''; if there were not, this book might never have been published. Gloria started the disco phenomenon, the book ignores this.

I bought I Will Survive, the book, with sincere enthusiasm. I wanted to know everything about how this legend started the entire disco scene, afterall she was/is the very first disco queen. And whilst the book provides the reader with a good insight into Gloria's religious convictions and all the many challenges that success and plain old life has sent her way, the book doesn't seem to capture the excitement that the great lady caused around the world with her pioneering disco beat. Frankly, I was left feeling a little let down by the time I reached the end of the book. If anyone is best placed to write the definitive book about the 70's disco scene, it is Gloria Gaynor. I hope she will have another go, because whilst disco was condemned by many in its day (they were jealous), the music has since become highly respected and sought after over the years. I love you Gloria Gaynor, you are my idol, but please 'dish the dirt' on disco in your next book (now there's some encouragement)and tell us a lot more about what went on behind the scenes. Personal insight to a highly sensitive individual

Having met Gloria and her husband, Linwood, the book pieced the entire puzzle together. A surprising love story that truly sustained thick and thin.
I have realized a new found respect for this couple. Not in their sucess and the legendary status of Gloria Gaynor, but in how very "normal" they are as people, just like us.

Gloria Gaynor--Rising Like a Phoenix

Gloria Gaynor's song, "I Will Survive" was an anthem for the 70's. Her soaring song brought everyone to their feet. Today, Gaynor continues to rise like a phoenix. Her spirit and her determination came out in song, and now she raises our spirits with memoirs on the printed page. Her story, along with fellow survivors who have overcome a variety of obstacles and set-backs, has resulted in an inspirational collection.

This book would make a wonderful gift for a dear friend or a beloved family member. I am planning on reading it, and then giving it away on my blog, to share the wealth...

Nature in Translation is an ethnographic exploration in the cultural politics of the translation of knowledge about nature. Shiho Satsuka follows the Japanese tour guides who lead hikes, nature walks, and sightseeing bus tours for Japanese tourists in Canada's Banff National Park and illustrates how they aspired to become local "nature interpreters" by learning the ecological knowledge authorized by the National Park. The guides assumed the universal appeal of Canada’s magnificent nature, but their struggle in translating nature reveals that our understanding of nature—including scientific knowledge—is always shaped by the specific socio-cultural concerns of the particular historical context. These include the changing meanings of work in a neoliberal economy, as well as culturally-specific dreams of finding freedom and self-actualization in Canada's vast nature. Drawing on nearly two years of fieldwork in Banff and a decade of conversations with the guides, Satsuka argues that knowing nature is an unending process of cultural translation, full of tensions, contradictions, and frictions. Ultimately, the translation of nature concerns what counts as human, what kind of society is envisioned, and who is included and excluded in the society as a legitimate subject.

Spanning the period from 400 to 1700, the second edition of Witchcraft in Europe assembles nearly twice as many primary documents as the first, many newly translated, along with new illustrations that trace the development of witch-beliefs from late Mediterranean antiquity through the Enlightenment. Trial records, inquisitors' reports, eyewitness statements, and witches' confessions, along with striking contemporary illustrations depicting the career of the Devil and his works, testify to the hundreds of years of terror that enslaved an entire continent.

Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, Thomas Hobbes, and other thinkers are quoted at length in order to determine the intellectual, perceptual, and legal processes by which "folklore" was transformed into systematic demonology and persecution. Together with explanatory notes, introductory essays—which have been revised to reflect current research—and a new bibliography, the documents gathered in Witchcraft in Europe vividly illumine the dark side of the European mind.

Superb collection of medieval documents on witchcraft from 400-1770 in Europe

If you're someone interested in the growth of witchcraft during the medieval era, you must own this text. Comprised of 69 treatises of well-known individuals in the time span mentioned, this book basically covers the whole shebang and they're all original sources. A superb text for a student of medieval history, witchcraft specifically and its growth over 1300 years, and the crushing results of such beliefs. You can pick or choose who to read depending on your interests or gobble up the whole book and come away well-rounded regarding your knowledge of the rise of witchcraft in medieval Europe. A must-have book for those studying this period.

Great collection

This book is a collection of source documents, arranged in roughly chronological order, relating to the development of the medieval views on witchcraft and the witch craze. It ends with later, more skeptical voices such as Reginald Scot.

The book begins with excerpts from the works of St. Augustine, eventually works its way through the writings of Thomas Aquinas, the Malleus Malifacarum, witch trial testimony, and even dissenting opinions in verdicts.
