Fun read

We Will Be Free made me smile a lot because I regularly identified myself with the Bell family's trip, being an overlander in South America myself. Simultaneously I felt the urge to keep on reading exactly because there were so many elements that are so distinct from my own journey, which surprised and captured me in many ways .
I feel that We Will Be Free will be enjoyed by a variety of people. Of course it's a perfect book for other overlanders, but just as much for armchair travelers, or those who have been traveling the world using public transport. For the last two groups Graeme's account gives insight in the pros and cons when exploring the world with your own vehicle. Such as fabulous the freedom it brings, as well as the headaches (e.g. car issues). While the book doesn't dig deep into the issue of traveling with kids, I believe We Will Be Free may be an inspiration for (future) parents who dream of following the Bell's family in their footsteps: (long-term) traveling with kids is possible.

Fun People, Great Story, Smooth Reading

Whether you're a seasoned overlander or an armchair global dreamer, this book is a fun read from start to finish. Graeme does a brilliant job entertwining hilarious accounts of working through the nuances of each country they visit, fiddling with the Land Rover, driving harrowing roads and dispelling some of the ridiculous preconceived "horrors" they were constantly warned about before setting off. A very easy read that'll have you shopping for a Landy of your own.

there are the fun days, the wow occasions & then there are ...

Not a riveting read but then such a trip isn't riveting, there are the fun days, the wow occasions & then there are days when nothing seems to go right, you might then ask okay so why the 4 stars, that was because the book is still an interesting & worthwhile read. You take the journey through the author's narration & how he experienced it, where he documents the daily experiences of his family on their overland trip & their daily trials & tribulations. If you are remotely interested in overlanding, exploring or travelling to new places then you can kind of get the experience & the idea of these places via the book. The author tells the story of their trip pretty well so that you get to understand how their typical day is & the highs & lows they experience, the good as well as the bad so that the reader understands that such a trip is not just a bed of roses & that their lives aren't just a big holiday, there are the daily mundane maintenance things that still need to be dealt with. He has no regrets though, as a family they seem to be enjoying themselves & are planning their next trip & next book. If you were/are planning such a trip for the first time then this book will either spur you on or sober you up, an adventure it is, but plain sailing no, Graeme seems to have told it as it is.
