Awesome Questions Yearning for Answers

This is not an easy book to read, and it does not leave the reader satisfied that a cohesive whole has been delivered. Yet that is also the strength of the book. DeCharms has used his knowledge of neuroscience (and an obvious understanding of the basics of Tibetan Buddhism) to interview some of the great teachers of Tibetan mind analysis about the detailed differences between their understanding of mind and that of western science. The result is not an answer but a series of questions calling for further exploration. For those who seek a first understanding of either side of the comparison, this book will be disappointingly unenlightening. For those with some understanding of one or both sides, it offers tantalizing vistas and the opportunity for new insights.

A comparison of Tibetan Buddhism and Western Neuroscience is no easy task. DeCharms analyses matters such as perception, cognition, awareness, and thought from two different perspectives, a comparison set not with the purpose of outlying similarities and differences but rather to establish what can be learn from each other. The aim is not to provide decisive and definitive answers but rather to open new ways of thinking about the mind. Considering the differences in methodology, concepts, assumptions, and purpose, besides the embedded flaws and limitations of both Buddhism and Neuroscience (a philosophical and scientific approach), the vastness and extent of this matter is quite complex. DeCharms states that Abhidharma is metaphysical, science is mechanistic, which means that even if the laws within the two systems are similar, they operate over very different domains of experience and should not be taken to be describing the same aspects of reality. This book covers an area of perennial debate and uncertainties, based on the inevitable realization that the only tool available to analyse the cognitive process is the cognitive process itself! Quite challenging reading and certainly will leave the reader with a lot more questions than answers.

This is a very good Turnaround book. I particularly like the scope development and validation section. Other interesting features correspond to the master scheduling sections as related to different phases of the turnaround.

It would have been good if presented more details about the phases of the Turnaround Management Process.

The review of project management theory is okay. However, I would stress the project management concepts as applied to maintenance work.

Their features combined those of known prehominids like Lucy, the famous Australopithecus, with those more human than anything ever before seen in prehistoric remains. Berger's team had discovered an all new species, and they called it Homo naledi.

The cave quickly proved to be the richest primitive hominid site ever discovered, full of implications that shake the very foundation of how we define what makes us human. Did this species come before, during, or after the emergence of Homo sapiens on our evolutionary tree? How did the cave come to contain nothing but the remains of these individuals? Did they bury their dead? If so, they must have had a level of self-knowledge, including an awareness of death. And yet those are the very characteristics used to define what makes us human. About the Author
LEE R. BERGER is the Research Professor in Human Origins and the Public Understanding of Science at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, and a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence. He was a founder of the Palaeoanthropological Scientific Trust, today the largest nonprofit organization in Africa supporting research into human origins. The director of one of the largest paleontological projects in history, leading over 100 researchers in investigations of the Malapa site in South Africa, Berger is the author of more than 200 scholarly and popular works. His research has been featured three times on the cover of Science and has been named among the top 100 science stories of the year by Time, Scientific American and Discover magazine on numerous occasions. Berger has appeared in many television documentaries on subjects related to archaeology, paleoanthropology, and natural history, and has appeared widely on television and radio, including NPR's Talk of the Nation, Morning Edition, and All Things Considered and PBS's News Hour and Alan Alda's Scientific American Frontiers. JOHN HAWKS is the Vilas-Borghesi Distinguished Achievement Professor of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin—Madison. He is the author of a widely read paleoanthropology blog, johnhawks.net. Hawks graduated from Kansas State University in 1994 with degrees in French, English, and anthropology. He received both his M.A. and Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Michigan. After working as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Utah, he moved to the University of Wisconsin—Madison, where he is currently a member of the anthropology department, teaching courses including human evolution, biological anthropology, and hominid paleoecology.

Worth the wait

I guess it's a bit more like 4.5 for me but why quibble. The only thing in this book I didn't appreciate was the cliffhanger at the end. :) The fact that it's possible to have a cliffhanger like that in a what is, essentially, a science book, is something I'm very grateful about. This discipline has been stagnant for way too long. In all seriousness, though, I wish it was longer, with a bit more details on the expedition and the people who participated in it. It's not all about the fossils, at least it isn't for me. I'd love to have more backstory.

Great read for all interested in the riddles of where we came from.

I have waiting for this book for such a long time. As a very interested amateur I have long admired both Lee Berger and John Hawks. It was a very good read, went back over Sediba which was great and such great detail and insight into the planning, setting up and management of the Rising Star dig. It showed the dedication of these scientists and their open mindedness and willingness to learn from others, and use of today's technology to further world wide research. Recommend it to all interested readers.

A Game Changer...

I've had an interest in human evolution and paleo anthropology since I was a kid, so from time to time, I try to keep up with current discoveries and academic trends. Almost Human served me well on several levels. First, it is an inside look at the intricacies and politics of presenting new material in a still somewhat staid environment. Lee Berger investigates making use of emerging technologies and sharing his intriguing discoveries with a greater number of scientists and interested parties than is the recognized method. In some cases he is criticized and in others, he finds ways to succeed. This is the story of collaboration that works. It's also a well-paced page turner revealing the tale of finding a truly game-changing trove of Hominid fossils in a completely overlooked, well-known location that the prevailing leaders in the field believed to be exhausted. The authors writing is engaging and personal. What might have been a dry academic paper instead, has enough anecdotal humanity that I felt I was brought right onto the sites alongside the hard-working scientists, cavers and organizers. Finally, it is a detailed look at the nuts and bolts of documenting and retrieving irreplaceable fossil evidence of the wide diversity in the emergence of modern human kind. Even the African Cradle of Humanity, is proving to be much broader than previously imagined. The International Naledi Team should be proud of how their hard work has increased the scope of our understanding of the oldest ancestors. It was a really enjoyable read that I recommend highly to any students of paleo anthropology wanting a feel for what it's like on a dig, or for anyone academic or not, who is interested in the complex briar patch our family tree is finally being revealed to be.

Brilliant and instructive - with difficulties

After an Introduction, which provides the necessary fundamental facts with didactic skill, chapters concerning Existence and Uniqueness, and Singularities follow. After the 4th chapter dealing with Riccati's Equation the main point are linear DE of second order. The book continues with chapters on special topics (7 Representation Thms, 8 Complex Oscillation Theory, 9 Linear nth Order and Matrix DE, 10 The Schwarzian). At the end nonlinear DE are treated. The extensive field in the title is explained deeply and very lucidly yet on an elementary level. However, at some points there are difficulties (e. g. some passages where the exposition is too brief). The exercises at the end of every section, which are at least in part easy, are very instructive. The index is good and the lists of references include many original work which, however, are generally quite old. Unfortunately there is no index of symbols. Chapter 9 on Linear nth Order and Matrix DE is brilliant in my opinion.

I bought this because I enjoyed.Analytic Function Theory. I haven't finished reading it, but it covers a lot of ground and is pretty readable. (warning: I have a phd in math, so readable for me might mean something different.)
